Ingredients

Here's a list of the ingredients you'll need to make my easy Fried Red Snapper recipe:

  • Red Snapper Fillets: You need about 6-7 fillets of Red snapper for this recipe. When buying fish, check its eyes. The eyes should be clear and transparent. If they are cloudy, the fish is not fresh. Wash the fish thoroughly, and let it dry.
  • Spices and Aromatics: The spices I use for marinating the fish are basic, and you should have them in your pantry. Lemon juice is also added to give a tangy flavor.
  • Flour and Gram flour: The fish is coated with a mixture of flour and gram flour, or baisan to give it a crispy exterior.
  • Oil: To fry the fish, use a neutral oil like canola or sunflower.

For detailed ingredients and quantities, view the recipe card below.

Instructions

Now let's make this delicious Red snapper fish recipe!

Make the Marinade

Begin by combining the marination ingredients.

In a bowl place the yogurt.

Add the spices one by one, beginning with the salt.

  • Take a bowl and add the yogurt.
  • Now add the rest of the marinade ingredients to it. Starting with the ginger and garlic paste.

Next, add the ginger garlic paste.

Then the turmeric powder.

  • Then add the salt.
  • Next, add turmeric powder.

Followed by the chili flakes and red chili powder.

  • Now, add the chili flakes for a fiery kick.
  • Add red chili powder.

Now, add the garam masala powder and zeera powder.

  • Add the garam masala powder.
  • Finally, add the zeera powder, or cumin powder.

Finally add the flour and gram flour for a crispy exterior.

  • Now, add the flour to the spices and yogurt.
  • Next, add the gram flour for an extra crispy coating.

Sprinkle the juice of one lemon.

  • Add the juice of one whole lemon.

Combine all the ingredients well.

Prepare the Fish

Wash the fish thoroughly. Pat it dry with a kitchen towel. Then let it air dry for 30 minutes.

Now, apply the marinade to the fish.

  • Combine all the spices thoroughly. The fish marinade is ready.
  • In a large bowl or platter, take the dried fish fillets.

Make sure that each fillet is well coated with the marinade.

Let it rest for 2-3 hours.

  • Start applying the marinade to each fish fillet.
  • Make sure the marinade coats the fish fillets well.

Frying the Fish

After the marination time is up, heat the oil in a large pan.

Carefully add 2-3 fillets to the hot oil. Don't overcrowd the pan.

  • Let the fish marinate for 2-3 hours.
  • After the fish has rested for 2-3 hours, heat the oil in a large pan.

Cook the fish on medium flame, turning it carefully.

  • Carefully place the fish in the hot oil.
  • Fry a couple of pieces at a time. Don't overcrowd the pan when frying.

When the fish is golden brown, it's ready!

  • Fry the fish on medium heat. Turn the fish fillets carefully.
  • When the fish has turned golden brown its ready!

Equipment

Here's the equipment I used to prepare these delicious crispy fried Red Snapper fillets:

  • 1 Medium-sized bowl
  • 1 Large bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • 1 Large frying pan or wok

Storage

Any fried fish recipe needs to be eaten while its hot. Otherwise, the coating will become soggy, and you won't have a crispy exterior.

However, you could marinate the fish a day or two before frying. Marinate and place the fish in an air-tight container. You can store it in the fridge for up to 2 days before frying and serving.

Top Tip

  • Make sure you buy fresh fish. When buying fish, the eyes should be clear and shiny. The body of the fish should feel firm to the touch.
  • After you wash the fish, pat it dry with a kitchen towel and let it air dry properly before marinating.
  • You can adjust the spices according to your taste.
  • Fry the fish on a medium-high heat to avoid burning or undercooking.

Serving Suggestion

This fish should be served as soon as it's fried. Add a side of a fresh green salad, such as my Summer Mix salad. You can also serve it with your favorite dip or chutney. I suggest a tangy tamarind chutney or refreshing mint and cucumber raita.

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

— Sana
