The ground beef dinner is the budget dinner that does not have to taste like a budget dinner. Halal ground beef is among the most affordable high-protein proteins available, and in the right format — well-spiced, properly built, served with good bread or rice — it produces dinners that the family requests on repeat without any awareness of what they cost.

I keep track of what our dinners cost in a rough but reliable way. The recipes on this list are the ones that, when I account for the main protein and the primary components (not counting pantry staples like salt, oil, and spices, which cost fractions of a penny per meal), come in at or under five dollars for a four-person serving. This includes halal ground beef at the typical supermarket price, a can of tomatoes, dried pasta, and whatever vegetables were on sale.

These 20 dinners are not compromises. They are the dinners that work within a tight budget and still produce full, satisfied eaters at the table. My husband has requested most of these by name without knowing the cost per serving. The information that dinner cost less than a cup of coffee per person is one I share selectively.

20. Classic Halal Beef Tacos

Classic halal ground beef tacos with homemade seasoning — the budget dinner that is also the most-requested dinner.

  • 500g halal ground beef (80/20)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • Homemade taco seasoning: 2 teaspoon chilli powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ⅓ cup water (to bloom the seasoning into a sauce)
  • 8 corn or flour tortillas
  • Toppings: shredded iceberg lettuce, diced tomato, shredded cheddar, sour cream, hot sauce — all optional, all cheap
  • Step 1: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add diced onion and cook 3 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook 1 minute.
  • Step 2: Add halal ground beef and break up thoroughly with a wooden spoon. Cook 5 to 6 minutes until browned throughout. Drain off excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon.
  • Step 3: Add all taco seasoning ingredients and ⅓ cup of water. Stir well and cook over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes until the water is mostly absorbed and the beef is coated in a thick, glossy spiced sauce. Taste and adjust salt.
  • Step 4: Warm tortillas in a dry skillet 30 seconds per side. Serve the beef filling with tortillas and whatever toppings are available.

19. Spaghetti Bolognese

Halal beef Bolognese sauce over spaghetti — the complete budget dinner in 30 minutes.

  • 500g halal ground beef
  • 400g spaghetti, cooked in salted water
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 carrot, finely grated (adds sweetness, stretches the sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herbs, ½ teaspoon smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • Parmesan or cheddar to serve
  • Step 1: Cook spaghetti in a large pot of well-salted boiling water until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
  • Step 2: While pasta cooks, heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook onion 4 minutes. Add garlic and grated carrot, cook 2 minutes. Add ground beef and brown thoroughly, breaking up well.
  • Step 3: Add crushed tomatoes, Italian herbs, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well. Simmer uncovered over medium-low heat for 12 to 15 minutes until thickened.
  • Step 4: Toss cooked spaghetti with the Bolognese sauce, adding a splash of pasta water to loosen if needed. Serve with grated cheese.

18. Beef and Potato Soup

Ground beef and potato soup — hearty, filling, and made from some of the cheapest ingredients available.

  • Step 1: Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Brown ground beef thoroughly, breaking up well. Drain excess fat.
  • Step 2: Add onion, garlic, carrots, and celery to the pot with the beef. Cook 4 minutes until beginning to soften.
  • Step 3: Add diced tomatoes, broth (or water and stock cubes), cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well. Bring to a boil.
  • Step 4: Add cubed potatoes. Reduce heat and simmer covered for 20 to 22 minutes until potatoes are completely tender. Adjust seasoning. Serve with crusty bread.

  • Step 2: Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat until cooked through. Drain fat. Add drained diced tomatoes, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, and salt. Stir and cook 3 minutes.
  • Step 3: Add cooked rice to the beef mixture. Stir to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning.

  • Step 2: Push beef to one side. Add another small drizzle of oil to the empty side. Add beaten eggs. Scramble until just set, then break up and mix with the beef.
  • Step 3: Add cold cooked rice. Press into the hot surface and leave undisturbed 1 minute to crisp slightly. Stir. Add frozen peas and corn, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Toss.
  • Step 4: Cook 2 more minutes until everything is heated through. Scatter spring onions. Serve immediately.

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (400g) diced tomatoes

4. Beef and Cabbage Stir Fry

  • Step 3: Add shredded cabbage to the pan. Toss with the beef. Cook 4 to 5 minutes over high heat, stirring, until the cabbage has wilted and has some golden edges.
  • Step 4: Add soy sauce, Worcestershire, paprika, caraway seeds if using, salt, and pepper. Toss and cook 1 minute. Serve over rice or mashed potato.

3. Beef and Tomato Pasta Bake

Ground beef and pasta baked with tomato sauce and cheese — the budget casserole that feeds a crowd.

  • 400g penne or rigatoni, cooked al dente and drained
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herbs, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar, divided

2. Beef Tacos with Homemade Shells

Halal beef tacos with quick pan-fried corn tortilla shells — folded and fried in the same skillet as the beef.

  • 500g halal ground beef, cooked with taco seasoning (same as Recipe #20)
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 1 cup neutral oil for frying
  • Toppings: shredded iceberg, diced tomato, shredded cheddar, sour cream, salsa
  • Step 1: Cook and season the ground beef as directed in Recipe #20. Transfer to a bowl and wipe the skillet clean.
  • Step 2: Heat ½ inch of neutral oil in the same skillet over medium-high heat until a corner of a tortilla sizzles immediately on contact.

  • Step 4: Fill the crispy shells immediately with the beef filling and serve with toppings. The shells soften after about 5 minutes, so serve and eat quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is halal ground beef available at budget prices?

Halal ground beef is available at supermarkets, butchers, and online suppliers at prices comparable to standard ground beef in most markets. In areas with significant Muslim populations, halal ground beef is often available at lower prices than conventional supermarket chains due to competition among halal butchers. Buying in larger quantities (1kg or more) and freezing portions typically reduces the per-serving cost significantly.

How do I stretch ground beef further to reduce the cost per serving?

Four methods: add cooked lentils (1 cup of cooked red lentils to 400g of beef produces 6 servings instead of 4 with minimal flavour difference), add cooked rice or quinoa to the filling (extends without diluting), use beans as a co-protein (black beans, kidney beans, and chickpeas all work well with ground beef), or increase the vegetable volume (more onion, carrot, and zucchini reduce the amount of beef needed per serving).

How long can I store cooked ground beef dishes?

Cooked ground beef dishes store for 4 to 5 days refrigerated in airtight containers. Most of the dishes on this list freeze well for up to 3 months. Dishes with pasta should be frozen before the pasta absorbs all the sauce — the sauce regenerates on reheating if there is still some liquid in the container. Soups and stews freeze best. Baked dishes reheat directly from the fridge in the oven at 175°C for 20 minutes.

What is the best fat percentage of ground beef for budget cooking?

80/20 (80% lean, 20% fat) is the ideal balance for most budget cooking — the fat provides flavour and moisture without excessive grease, and it is typically priced lower than leaner options. 90/10 is better for dishes where excess fat is a problem (like taco filling that goes inside a soft tortilla) but costs slightly more. Extra-lean 96/4 costs the most and produces the least flavourful results in most of these recipes.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.
