Saad asked for this three weeks in a row before I finally wrote the recipe down. It started because I had leftover cream cheese in the fridge and a punnet of strawberries that needed using up — I threw it together mostly out of desperation — and somehow it became the thing he requests every time we have people over.

What I like about this dip is how honestly simple it is. You're beating cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla, folding in whipped topping, stirring through strawberries and a swirl of jam, and then chilling it until it firms up. That's the whole recipe. There's no baking, no water bath, no cracked cheesecake to stress about. It tastes like cheesecake filling — which is exactly what it is — and you make it in about ten minutes.

I usually make this for birthday gatherings or when friends come over on short notice. I set out a bowl of the dip surrounded by graham crackers, vanilla wafers, and a plate of sliced strawberries. It disappears faster than any fancy dessert I've ever made. If you're also into easy no-bake desserts, my Mini No-Bake Lemon Cheesecake Tarts follow the same general idea and are just as low-effort.

One thing I learned the hard way: don't skip the chilling time. The first time I made this, I served it immediately because I was running late and the whole thing was too loose — it slid off the crackers. Thirty minutes in the fridge minimum, one hour is better. It firms up nicely and the flavors settle into something that actually tastes intentional.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Ten minutes of actual work: I timed myself once — from taking the cream cheese out to covering the bowl and putting it in the fridge — it was eleven minutes. Most of that was waiting for my hand mixer to do its job. If you don't have a hand mixer, a wooden spoon and some elbow grease will work, it'll just take a few extra minutes to get the cream cheese really smooth.

  • No baking, no stress: This is genuinely one of those recipes that doesn't require you to think too hard. There's nothing to overcook, nothing to time carefully, and no oven to preheat. On the days I'm already exhausted from cooking a full dinner, being able to pull out a dessert like this without turning on the stove is something I genuinely appreciate.

  • Works with whatever dippers you have: Graham crackers are the classic choice and they're what my kids reach for first, but I've set this out with vanilla wafers, pretzels, apple slices, and even plain digestive biscuits. The slight saltiness of a pretzel against the sweet cream cheese is genuinely great. Use whatever's in your pantry.

  • Make-ahead friendly: I almost always make this the night before a gathering. It actually tastes better after sitting overnight — the strawberry flavor works its way through the whole dip. Just cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and pull it out 10 minutes before serving so it's not ice-cold.

  • Easy to dress up for a party spread: I serve this alongside my Jalapeño Poppers when I want a mix of sweet and savory on the table. A few fresh strawberries laid on top of the dip, a light drizzle of jam, and it looks like you put in way more effort than you actually did.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (full-fat works best)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups whipped topping, like Cool Whip (thawed from frozen)
  • ½ cup strawberry jam or preserves
  • Optional: fresh strawberries for garnish or mixing in
  • Graham crackers, vanilla wafers, pretzels, or fruit slices for dipping

Directions

  1. Beat the cream cheese base: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until it's smooth with no lumps — this is the step where cold cream cheese will fight you. Let it sit at room temperature for at least 15 minutes first. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract and beat again until creamy and combined.
  2. Fold in the whipped topping: Add the Cool Whip and fold it in gently using a rubber spatula. Don't stir hard — you want to keep the airiness in the whipped topping. A few gentle folding strokes until everything is just incorporated is all you need.
  3. Add the strawberry flavor: Spoon in the strawberry jam or preserves. If you want a marbled look, use a knife or skewer to swirl it through without fully mixing. If you want more texture, stir in some diced fresh strawberries too — I usually do both.
  4. Chill the dip: Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, ideally an hour. This step is not optional — it firms up the texture and lets everything meld together. I skip nothing here.
  5. Serve: Spoon into your serving bowl, top with a few fresh strawberry slices if you have them, and set out your dippers. Serve cold.

Tips for Success

  • Let the cream cheese come to room temperature: I cannot stress this enough. Cold cream cheese will leave you with a lumpy, grainy dip no matter how long you beat it. I usually pull mine out of the fridge 20 to 30 minutes before I start. If you forgot, cut it into small cubes — it softens faster that way.

  • Use full-fat cream cheese: I've tried the reduced-fat version twice and both times the texture was slightly grainy and the dip was looser than I wanted. The full-fat block of Philadelphia or a store-brand equivalent gives you that thick, rich base that makes this actually worth eating.

  • Fold, don't stir, the whipped topping: The whole point of using Cool Whip is the lightness it adds. If you stir it in aggressively, you knock all the air out and end up with a denser, heavier dip. Gentle folding with a spatula in slow circular motions is what keeps it fluffy.

  • Don't skip the chill time: I already mentioned this in the directions but it's worth repeating because I've rushed it before and regretted it. Fresh from mixing, the dip is too soft and slides off everything. After 30 to 60 minutes in the fridge, it holds its shape and the flavor is noticeably better.

  • Taste before you chill: Powdered sugar levels are a personal thing. I like mine on the less-sweet side because the jam adds a lot of sugar on its own. Add your sugar gradually — start with ¾ cup, taste, then add more if you want it sweeter. Once it's in, you can't take it out.

Variations

  • Mixed berry version: Swap the strawberry jam for raspberry, blueberry, or a mixed berry preserve. I've done this with a good blueberry jam from Trader Joe's and it works beautifully. The color comes out a deep purple and the flavor is a little more tart, which my husband actually prefers.

  • Lemon-strawberry twist: Add a teaspoon of fresh lemon zest when you're beating the cream cheese base. It adds a brightness that cuts through the richness nicely. If you're a lemon dessert person, you'd probably also love my Lemon Cream Cheese Dump Cake — same creamy-tangy idea, completely different format.

  • Chocolate chip addition: Fold in 3 to 4 tablespoons of mini chocolate chips right before serving so they stay cold and don't sink. This is Zainab's preferred version — she calls it the "fancy one" and requests it specifically for her birthday each year.

  • Peach preserves version: In the summer when I can find good peach jam, I use that instead of strawberry. It's softer in flavor and pairs really well with vanilla wafers and sliced fresh peaches on the side. This isn't a traditional Pakistani flavor at all — it's something I picked up from a potluck years ago — but it works.

  • Vegan option: Use a vegan cream cheese (Violife works well) and swap the Cool Whip for coconut whipped cream. The texture is slightly different but it still sets up nicely after chilling. The strawberry jam swirl covers most of the flavor difference.

Serving and Storage

Serving

Serve cold, straight from the fridge. I put it in a wide, shallow bowl so there's enough surface area for easy dipping. Graham crackers are the classic pairing and what most people reach for first, but pretzel thins are genuinely great with this — the salt contrast works really well. Sliced apples, strawberries, and banana pieces all hold up fine as dippers too. If I'm setting this out at a party, I arrange the dippers around the bowl on a large board to make it look like I planned something elaborate. I didn't.

Storage

Leftovers keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Give it a gentle stir before serving again — it may have settled a little. I don't recommend freezing this one; the texture of the whipped topping breaks down after thawing and goes a bit watery. Make it fresh or up to a day ahead, and you're good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen strawberries instead of fresh?

Yes, but you need to thaw them completely and drain off as much liquid as possible before adding them. Frozen strawberries release a lot of water as they thaw, and if you skip the draining step you'll end up with a loose, watery dip. Pat them dry with a paper towel too. Fresh is easier here if you can get them.

Can I make this dip a day ahead?

Absolutely — I do this regularly. Make it the night before, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. The flavor is actually better the next day after everything has had time to blend together. Pull it out about 10 minutes before serving so it's not too stiff to dip into.

How long does strawberry cheesecake dip last in the fridge?

Up to 3 days in an airtight container. After that the texture starts to break down and it gets a bit watery from the fruit. Stir gently before serving if it's been sitting for more than a few hours.

Can I use flavored cream cheese in this recipe?

Yes, strawberry or mixed berry cream cheese works well and adds an extra layer of flavor without any extra steps. Just keep in mind it may already be sweetened, so taste the base before adding your full amount of powdered sugar — you might want to cut it back by a few tablespoons.

What are the best things to serve with this dip?

Graham crackers and vanilla wafers are the most popular at my table. Pretzel thins work really well if you like sweet-salty combinations. For fruit, apple slices, strawberry halves, and banana slices all hold up to dipping without falling apart. If you want something a little different, shortbread cookies or digestive biscuits are great too.

This strawberry cheesecake dip has become my go-to when I need a dessert that requires almost no effort but still feels like something special on the table. I make it the night before, chill it overnight, and the hardest part of the whole thing is remembering to take the cream cheese out of the fridge early enough. For a recipe that takes this little time, it gets a disproportionate amount of compliments.

If you're putting together a party spread and want something savory alongside the sweet, my Jalapeño Poppers pair really well with this — the contrast keeps things interesting. And if no-bake desserts are your thing, the Mini No-Bake Lemon Cheesecake Tarts are another one I come back to repeatedly when I don't want to turn the oven on.

However you serve it — with graham crackers, fruit, pretzels, or just a spoon when no one's looking — I hope it makes your next gathering a little easier and a lot sweeter. 🍓✨

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.
