Every Fourth of July, I end up making some version of this snack mix, and every year I tweak it a little more. This time I landed on something I actually want to keep making — pretzels, popcorn, white chocolate, M&M's, dried cranberries, and blueberries all tossed together into this crunchy, sweet, salty mess that disappears faster than anything else on the table.

What I like about this version is that the white chocolate does the binding work. You drizzle it over everything warm, toss gently, and then let it set on parchment. No baking, no corn syrup glaze, no fuss. The chocolate holds the mix together in loose clusters that are easy to grab by the handful. The dried cranberries bring a tiny bit of chew and tartness, and the blueberries — I use freeze-dried ones from Walmart because fresh blueberries go soft — pop with color and flavor against all that white chocolate.

Saad saw the red, white, and blue colors before he even tasted it and immediately asked if it was "the fireworks snack." That's what we call it now. I make a double batch every time because one batch is gone before I've even finished cleaning up the bowl. If you're heading to a party or hosting one, this is the kind of thing you can put together in 20 minutes and it travels well in a zip-lock bag or a big plastic container.

One thing to know before you start: let the white chocolate cool and set fully before you break it into clusters. I made the mistake of trying to move it too soon the first time and ended up with a sticky blob rather than a snack mix. Give it at least 30 minutes on the counter, or pop it in the fridge for 15. If you're the type who likes to serve a proper dessert alongside this, my Raspberry Cheesecake Balls work really well on the same party table.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • No oven required: The whole thing comes together with a microwave and a big bowl. There's no baking, no hot kitchen, no timer to worry about — which is exactly what I want on a July afternoon when it's already 90 degrees outside. The white chocolate melts in 30-second bursts and that's the most "cooking" involved. I've made this start-to-finish in under 20 minutes, which leaves me time to actually enjoy the party.

  • The colors do the work for you: Red M&M's and cranberries, white chocolate and yogurt-covered raisins, blue M&M's and blueberries — you barely have to style it. Just pour it into a bowl and it already looks festive. I've never been great at decorating party food, so I appreciate a recipe that handles its own presentation.

  • Sweet and salty in every handful: The pretzels bring the salt, the M&M's and white chocolate bring the sweet, and the dried cranberries cut through everything with a little tartness. It's the kind of snack where you keep reaching in without thinking about it. My husband, who normally doesn't go near sweet snacks, ate three handfuls while watching cricket on TV.

  • Easy to double (or triple) for a crowd: This recipe scales up perfectly. I usually make at least a double batch because a single one is gone too fast. There's no tricky ratio to maintain — just multiply everything evenly and use a larger bowl or two bowls if needed. It takes maybe five extra minutes.

  • Travels well and keeps for days: Once the chocolate sets, this mix holds up really well in a sealed container at room temperature for up to 5 days. I've packed it in zip-lock bags for picnics and it arrived in perfect shape. It's one of those rare snacks that doesn't need to be made right before serving.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups mini pretzels
  • 2 cups popcorn (plain or lightly salted — I use microwave popcorn with the butter shaken off)
  • 2 cups red, white, and blue M&M's or patriotic candy-coated chocolates
  • 2 cups white chocolate chips
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup blueberries, fresh or freeze-dried (freeze-dried hold up much better in the mix)
  • 1 cup yogurt-covered raisins

Directions

  • Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the pretzels, popcorn, M&M's, dried cranberries, blueberries, and yogurt-covered raisins. Give it a gentle toss just to distribute everything evenly. Don't add the white chocolate chips to this bowl yet — they go in the microwave separately.
  • Step 2: Melt the white chocolate. Put the white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and melt in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each one. White chocolate burns quickly so don't rush it — usually takes about 3 rounds. It should be smooth and pourable but not scorching hot.
  • Step 3: Drizzle and toss. Pour the melted white chocolate over the snack mix in a thin stream, then use a spatula or wooden spoon to gently fold everything together. You want everything lightly coated, not drowning. Be careful not to crush the popcorn or break the pretzels.
  • Step 4: Spread and set. Tip the coated mix out onto a large sheet of parchment paper laid flat on your counter or a sheet pan. Spread it into a single layer as best you can. Let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes, or refrigerate for 15 minutes if you're in a hurry. This step is non-negotiable — if you try to move it too soon it turns into a sticky blob.
  • Step 5: Break and serve. Once the chocolate is fully set, break the mix into loose clusters with your hands. Pile it into a big bowl for a party table, or portion into individual cups or bags for easy grabbing.

Tips for Success

  • Use freeze-dried blueberries, not fresh: I made this with fresh blueberries the first time and they released moisture as the mix sat, which made the whole thing go soggy around them. Freeze-dried blueberries from Trader Joe's or Walmart hold their shape, stay dry, and honestly taste even more concentrated and bright. It's a small switch that makes a real difference.

  • Don't overheat the white chocolate: White chocolate seizes up and turns grainy if it gets too hot. I've ruined a whole bowl by going 60 seconds at a time instead of 30. Go slow, stir between each interval, and stop as soon as it's just barely smooth. If it's slightly thick when you pour it, that's fine — it'll still coat.

  • Toss gently with a folding motion: If you stir too aggressively, you'll smash the popcorn and break the pretzels into crumbs. Use a wide spatula and fold from the bottom up rather than stirring in circles. The goal is everything lightly coated, not pulverized.

  • Line your pan with parchment before you start: Have the parchment laid out before you melt the chocolate. Once the chocolate goes on, you're working quickly and you don't want to be fussing around tearing parchment with chocolatey hands. Prep this ahead and you'll thank yourself.

  • Add the M&M's last if you want sharp color: If you fold the M&M's in with everything else before the chocolate goes on, some of the color coating can rub off and tint your white chocolate pinkish or purplish. I add most of them with the mix but save a small handful to scatter on top after drizzling — looks cleaner and the colors stay vivid.

Variations

  • Swap the popcorn for rice cereal: If you want a more shelf-stable mix or you're making this a day ahead and worried about the popcorn going stale, rice cereal squares (like Rice Chex) are a great substitute. They stay crisp for days and hold up better under the white chocolate coating. My husband actually prefers the Chex version — more crunch, less airy.

  • Add roasted salted peanuts: A cup of peanuts adds a savory nutty element that makes the sweet-salty balance even more interesting. I sometimes do half peanuts, half pretzels for a mix that leans more savory. Skip if there are nut allergies in the crowd — this mix is easy enough to adapt.

  • Use red, white, and blue sprinkles on top: After you spread the mix on parchment and before the chocolate sets, scatter patriotic sprinkles over the top. They stick right into the chocolate and look great. You can find themed sprinkle mixes at Walmart or Target around July — they're cheap and make a big visual impact.

  • Drizzle red candy coating over the top: For more defined color contrast, melt some red candy melts separately and drizzle them in zigzag lines over the set white chocolate. It turns the whole thing into something that looks almost styled, and it takes maybe 3 extra minutes. Wilton candy melts from any craft or grocery store work fine.

  • Make it nut-free with sunflower seeds: If the party crowd includes kids with nut allergies, swap any nuts for roasted sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds. They add crunch without the allergen risk and blend in well with the other flavors. Always worth double-checking your M&M's bag too — some varieties contain peanuts.

Serving and Storage

Serving

I like to pile this into a wide shallow bowl so people can see all the colors — a deep bowl hides the red and blue elements at the bottom. For individual servings at parties, small paper cups or clear snack bags tied with a ribbon work really well and look put-together with zero effort. This mix also travels easily in a big zip-lock bag for picnics or outdoor gatherings. If you're setting up a full snack table alongside this, my Queso Cheese Dip is a savory anchor that balances out all the sweetness nicely.

Storage

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. The pretzels will start to soften a little after day 3, so if you're making it ahead, I'd aim for no more than 2 days out. Do not refrigerate once it's stored — the condensation when you bring it back to room temperature makes things sticky and soft. And don't freeze it; the texture of the popcorn and the chocolate both suffer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this snack mix the day before the party?

Yes, and honestly it's better to make it ahead. Give the white chocolate a full night to set and the flavors meld together nicely. Just store it in an airtight container at room temperature — not the fridge — and it'll be ready to go the next day. I usually make it the evening before a Fourth of July party and it's in perfect shape by the time guests arrive.

How do I keep the mix from clumping into one big chunk?

Spread it as thin as you can on the parchment and let it set fully before touching it. If you try to move or break it up too soon, it sticks together. Once the chocolate is hard and set — give it a tap with your finger — you can break it into loose clusters easily. Don't use too much white chocolate either; you want a light drizzle, not a full coating.

Can I use milk chocolate instead of white chocolate?

You can, but it changes the look significantly. White chocolate is part of what makes this feel red, white, and blue — the white base makes the colors pop. Milk or dark chocolate will give you a delicious snack mix but it'll look more like a chocolate bark than a patriotic treat. If that doesn't matter to you, go for it — the flavor combination still works.

What can I use instead of yogurt-covered raisins?

White chocolate chips work perfectly as a substitute — just toss them in dry rather than melting them. Mini marshmallows are another good option if you want some chew. Some people use white candy-coated sunflower seeds for the same visual effect. The yogurt-covered raisins are mostly there for color and chew, so anything pale and small will do the job.

Is this recipe gluten-free?

Standard mini pretzels contain gluten, so as written this recipe is not gluten-free. If you need a gluten-free version, swap the pretzels for gluten-free pretzels (Snyder's makes a gluten-free variety available at most grocery stores) and double-check your popcorn and candy labels. The rest of the ingredients are typically fine, but always read labels if you're cooking for someone with celiac disease.

This is one of those recipes I keep coming back to because of how little effort it takes relative to how much people react to it. Something about the colors and the mix of textures makes it feel more special than a bowl of chips, even though it takes about the same amount of effort as opening a bag of chips. I pull this out every Fourth of July and every Memorial Day, and I'm already thinking about doing a Halloween version with orange candy melts and black and orange M&M's in the fall.

If you're hosting a full spread, this snack mix pairs really well with something more substantial on the table. My Mississippi Chicken is a slow cooker recipe that basically cooks itself while you're putting together snacks like this one. And if you want to round out the dessert side of things, my Strawberry Cheesecake Cinnamon Rolls are a crowd favorite for brunch or a late-morning spread before the party kicks off.

Make a double batch. I'm serious. Single batch is gone in 20 minutes at any gathering I've brought it to, and then I'm the one standing there watching everyone else look for more. Double batch means leftovers for the next day, and this mix is genuinely good for breakfast with coffee if nobody's watching. 🎆🍿❤️🤍💙

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.
