Last Father's Day my husband and I had the rare gift of an empty house for a single evening because Saad and Zainab were at my husband's parents' house for an overnight stay, and I realized I had absolutely no idea how to cook for just two people anymore.

Every recipe in my regular rotation feeds 4 to 8 people because Saad eats like he's training for an athletic career and Zainab requires multiple alternative dishes because she rejects whatever the rest of us are eating.

I made a half-batch of my husband's favorite biryani that night, scaled down a steak recipe from one of my mother's old cookbooks, and we ended up with enough leftover food to feed us for the entire following week, which defeated the entire purpose of cooking something special.

After that experience I started collecting recipes scaled specifically for two people, and this roundup is the curated list I wish I had had that Father's Day evening when I was scrambling to scale down recipes designed for crowds.

These 17 dinner recipes are perfect for that increasingly common modern situation where the kids are spending Father's Day evening with grandparents (Saad and Zainab now do this most years for various holidays) and you finally have a quiet candlelit table for two.

My husband's favorite among these is the cast iron steak for two at #1, which has become our actual Father's Day tradition because the recipe is genuinely scaled for two diners and produces zero leftover steak for the week ahead.

My mother in Pakistan used to say that special meals should match the moment they're served in — a celebration dinner should feel celebratory rather than feel like Tuesday's dinner with extra plates, which means scaling matters as much as cooking technique.

Each recipe in this list is genuinely portioned for 2 servings without requiring complicated math to divide a 4-serving recipe in half (which never works out properly because half an egg doesn't exist in a kitchen).

The countdown moves from casual quick weeknight-style dinners at #17 toward elevated date-night dinners at #1, so you can pick based on your skill level, time available, and how much effort feels right for the specific Father's Day in your household.

Whether your Father's Day involves grilling on the back patio, intimate candlelit dinner indoors, brunch-for-dinner, or something in between — one of these recipes is going to be exactly right for your situation.

Father's Day Dinner Recipes for Two — Counting Down to #1

17. Garlic Butter Shrimp Scampi for Two

This 15-minute shrimp scampi delivers restaurant-quality buttery health benefits of garlic-lemon shrimp over linguine for exactly two diners, with no half-empty pasta box leftover or shrimp scraps to wonder about. My husband loves this one because it tastes far more impressive than the work required, and we use it for quick anniversaries and unexpected celebration evenings.

Ingredients

  • ½ lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 6 oz linguine pasta
  • 4 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup dry white wine or chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice + zest of 1 lemon
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt, pepper, and grated Parmesan to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook linguine according to package directions; reserve ½ cup pasta water.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add garlic and red pepper flakes, cook 30 seconds.
  3. Add shrimp, season with salt and pepper, cook 2 minutes per side until pink.
  4. Add wine or broth and lemon juice; simmer 1 minute.
  5. Toss in cooked pasta, lemon zest, and parsley; add pasta water as needed for sauce.
  6. Top with Parmesan and serve immediately.

16. Cast Iron Lemon-Herb Chicken Breasts for Two

Two perfect chicken breasts with crispy golden skin and bright lemon-herb pan sauce — restaurant-quality from a single cast iron skillet in 25 minutes. The technique transfers from my mother in Pakistan's chicken roast principle: high heat sear, finish gentle, deglaze the pan for sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 bone-in skin-on chicken breasts (about 10 oz each)
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil + 2 tablespoon butter
  • 4 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 2 sprigs rosemary, 4 sprigs thyme
  • 1 lemon (½ sliced, ½ for juice)
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Pat chicken dry and season generously with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat olive oil in cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  3. Sear chicken skin-side down for 6-7 minutes until deeply golden; flip.
  4. Add butter, garlic, rosemary, thyme, and lemon slices around chicken.
  5. Transfer skillet to oven, roast 12-15 minutes until internal temp reaches 165°F.
  6. Remove chicken; deglaze pan with broth and lemon juice, simmer 2 minutes.
  7. Spoon pan sauce over chicken and serve.

15. Quick Beef Stir-Fry for Two

A 20-minute beef stir-fry for two over jasmine rice — tender beef strips, crisp vegetables, and a savory garlic-ginger-soy sauce that comes together in one pan. Saad already requests this one for his "when I'm older" food memory file.

Ingredients

  • ½ lb flank or sirloin steak, thinly sliced against grain
  • 1 cup jasmine rice (cooked)
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 3 tablespoon soy sauce + 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil + 1 teaspoon cornstarch (in slurry with 2 tablespoon water)

Instructions

  1. Toss sliced beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce; let marinate 5 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in wok over high heat; stir-fry beef 2 minutes; remove.
  3. Add bell pepper and broccoli, stir-fry 3 minutes.
  4. Add garlic and ginger, stir-fry 30 seconds.
  5. Return beef; add remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil.
  6. Pour in cornstarch slurry; stir until sauce thickens.
  7. Serve over jasmine rice.

14. Sheet Pan Salmon with Asparagus for Two

A 20-minute sheet pan salmon dinner with garlic-butter asparagus, lemon, and crispy edges — minimal cleanup, maximum flavor. Perfect for the Father's Day dinner where you want healthy-elegant without standing over the stove.

Ingredients

  • 2 salmon fillets (6 oz each), skin-on
  • 1 lb fresh asparagus, trimmed
  • 3 tablespoon olive oil + 2 tablespoon melted butter
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lemon (zest + juice + slices)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon fresh dill or parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a sheet pan with parchment.
  2. Arrange asparagus on pan; drizzle with olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place salmon fillets on pan; brush with melted butter, season with paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Top with lemon slices.
  5. Roast 12-15 minutes until salmon flakes easily.
  6. Garnish with lemon zest, juice, and fresh herbs.

13. Creamy Mushroom Chicken Marsala for Two

Classic Italian-American Chicken Marsala scaled for two — pan-seared chicken cutlets in creamy mushroom-marsala sauce, the dinner that tastes like a $40-per-plate restaurant entrée. My husband still asks about the one I made for his birthday two years ago.

Ingredients

  • 2 chicken breasts, pounded thin and dredged in flour
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 tablespoon olive oil + 2 tablespoon butter
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ cup Marsala wine (or substitute with apple juice + 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar for non-alcoholic)
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • ⅓ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Season pounded chicken with salt and pepper; dredge in flour.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; sear chicken 3-4 minutes per side. Remove.
  3. Add butter; sauté mushrooms 5 minutes until golden.
  4. Add shallots and garlic, sauté 2 minutes.
  5. Pour in Marsala (or substitute); simmer 2 minutes.
  6. Add broth and cream; simmer 3 minutes until thickened.
  7. Return chicken to pan; spoon sauce over. Garnish with parsley.

12. Grilled Lamb Chops with Mint Chimichurri for Two

Four perfectly grilled lamb chops with vibrant mint-cilantro chimichurri — fancy-restaurant Father's Day dinner that takes 20 minutes total. The mint chimichurri channels my mother in Pakistan's hara chutney principle, but applied to a Western entrée context.

Ingredients

  • 4 lamb rib chops (about 1 lb total)
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil + 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin + 1 teaspoon salt + ½ teaspoon pepper
  • Mint Chimichurri:
  • ½ cup fresh mint leaves
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Marinate lamb chops with olive oil, garlic, cumin, salt, and pepper for 15 minutes.
  2. Pulse all chimichurri ingredients in a food processor until coarsely chopped.
  3. Preheat grill or grill pan to high heat.
  4. Grill lamb chops 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare.
  5. Rest 3 minutes; serve with generous spoonful of mint chimichurri.

11. Pan-Seared Scallops with Brown Butter for Two

Six perfectly golden-seared scallops with nutty brown butter, capers, and lemon — the dinner that makes you feel like you're at a coastal restaurant for one-fourth the price. Twelve minutes from cold pan to plated.

Ingredients

  • 10-12 large dry-pack sea scallops
  • 2 tablespoon neutral oil for searing
  • 4 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoon capers, drained
  • 2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Pat scallops VERY dry with paper towels; season with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat oil in heavy skillet over high heat until smoking.
  3. Sear scallops 90 seconds per side without moving — proper crust requires undisturbed contact.
  4. Remove scallops; reduce heat to medium.
  5. Add butter; cook until nutty brown and foaming (about 2 minutes).
  6. Add capers and lemon juice off heat.
  7. Pour brown butter sauce over scallops; garnish with parsley.

10. Crispy Pan-Fried Pork Chops with Apple Sauce for Two

Two thick-cut bone-in pork chops with golden-crispy crust and homemade chunky apple sauce — diner-style comfort dinner elevated for an intimate evening. Our household substitutes chicken thighs for a halal version, which works beautifully with the same technique.

Ingredients

  • 2 thick-cut bone-in pork chops (1 inch thick) — or substitute 4 bone-in chicken thighs
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil + 2 tablespoon butter
  • 2 sprigs rosemary, 4 sprigs thyme
  • Apple Sauce:
  • 2 Honeycrisp apples, peeled and diced
  • 2 tablespoon butter + 2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon + pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoon apple cider

Instructions

  1. Make apple sauce: sauté apples in butter, add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cider; cook 10-12 minutes until soft.
  2. Pat chops dry; season generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Heat olive oil in cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.

  5. Add butter and herbs; baste chops for 1 minute.
  6. Rest chops 3 minutes; serve with warm apple sauce.

9. Homemade Fettuccine Alfredo for Two

Silky homemade fettuccine alfredo scaled for two — real Parmigiano-Reggiano, heavy cream, fresh garlic, and good fettuccine. 15 minutes from boiling water to plated. The dinner that tastes like Italy from your own kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz fettuccine pasta
  • 6 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1.5 cups freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper
  • 2 tablespoon fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Cook fettuccine according to package directions; reserve ¾ cup pasta water.
  2. Melt butter in large skillet over medium heat; add garlic, cook 1 minute.
  3. Pour in heavy cream; simmer 3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. Add Parmigiano-Reggiano in 3 portions, whisking after each.
  5. Add nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  6. Toss in cooked pasta; add pasta water as needed.
  7. Garnish with extra Parmesan and parsley.

8. Honey-Garlic Glazed Salmon for Two

Two salmon nutrition fillets glazed with sticky honey-garlic-soy sauce and finished with sesame seeds and scallions — Asian-inspired Father's Day dinner that's healthy enough to feel good about, indulgent enough to feel special.

Ingredients

  • 2 salmon fillets (6 oz each)
  • 3 tablespoon honey + 2 tablespoon soy sauce + 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced + 1 teaspoon fresh ginger

  4. Pour glaze over salmon; cook 3 more minutes, basting frequently.
  5. Garnish with sesame seeds and scallions.

7. Classic Beef Stroganoff for Two

Ingredients

  • ½ lb sirloin steak, thinly sliced

  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  5. Add broth; simmer 5 minutes.
  6. Stir in sour cream and Dijon off heat.
  7. Return beef; serve over egg noodles, garnish with dill.

  2. Heat cast iron skillet or grill pan to high heat.
  3. Sear steak 4 minutes per side for medium-rare; rest 5 minutes.
  4. In same pan, sauté peppers and onions 5-6 minutes.
  5. Slice steak against the grain.
  6. Serve with warm tortillas and toppings.

5. Mushroom Risotto for Two

Creamy parmesan-mushroom risotto for two — 30 minutes of patient stirring that produces restaurant-quality Italian comfort. The kind of date-night dinner where the cooking process itself is part of the romance.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Arborio rice
  • 8 oz mixed mushrooms (cremini + shiitake), sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 3 tablespoon butter + 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

  5. Stir in mushrooms, Parmesan, and parsley.
  6. Season with salt and pepper; serve immediately.

  7. Add lemon juice and zest; pour shrimp and butter sauce over plated steaks.
  8. Garnish with parsley.

3. Slow-Roasted Beef Tenderloin for Two

1. The Champion: Cast Iron Steak for Two with Garlic Herb Butter

This is our actual Father's Day tradition — two thick-cut ribeyes seared in a screaming-hot cast iron skillet, basted with garlic-herb butter, and rested to perfect medium-rare. The recipe that earned the #1 spot because my husband requests it every Father's Day without exception, and Saad and Zainab have learned that "dad's special steak night" means they get pizza at Grandma's house. Twenty-five minutes from grocery bag to plated dinner, and the smell alone makes the house feel like a steakhouse.

Ingredients

  • 2 thick-cut ribeye steaks (1.5 inches thick, about 12 oz each)
  • 2 tablespoon neutral oil (high smoke point — vegetable or avocado)
  • 6 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 6 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 4 sprigs rosemary
  • 6 sprigs thyme
  • 2 teaspoon kosher salt (Diamond Crystal)
  • 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon flaky sea salt (Maldon) for finishing

Instructions

  1. Remove steaks from fridge 45 minutes before cooking; let come to room temperature.
  2. Pat steaks VERY dry with paper towels; season generously with kosher salt and black pepper on all sides.
  3. Heat cast iron skillet over high heat for 5 minutes until smoking hot.
  4. Add neutral oil to skillet; carefully place steaks in pan.
  5. Sear undisturbed for 3 minutes; flip and sear 3 more minutes for medium-rare.
  6. Reduce heat to medium; add butter, garlic, rosemary, and thyme.
  7. Tilt pan slightly; baste steaks with foaming butter for 90 seconds.
  8. Remove steaks to cutting board; rest 8-10 minutes (essential for juices to redistribute).
  9. Slice against the grain; sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
  10. Spoon garlic-herb butter over slices and serve immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a great Father's Day dinner for two?

The best Father's Day dinners for two are scaled specifically for 2 servings (so there are no awkward leftovers for the rest of the week), feature ingredients the dad in your life actually loves (this isn't the night to introduce him to a new cuisine he's unsure about), require minimal active cooking time (so the cook isn't stuck in the kitchen for hours while the celebration happens without them), and elevate the everyday dinner experience with at least one premium ingredient (good steak, fresh seafood, real Parmigiano-Reggiano, quality butter). Our household has settled on cast iron steak for two as the Father's Day tradition because it checks all four boxes.

How do I scale down a 4-serving recipe to 2 servings?

The simple rule: divide all ingredients by half, with three important exceptions. First, spices and seasonings often don't scale linearly — start with half the seasoning amount and taste, then add more if needed. Second, eggs are difficult to divide — for a recipe calling for 1 egg, beat the egg and use half (about 2 tablespoons). Third, baking time changes — most baked goods will cook 15-25% faster in a smaller dish, so check at the minimum baking time. For pan-cooked dishes, halving works cleanly; for baked dishes, use a smaller pan AND reduce baking time.

Can I make these recipes ahead of time?

Several of these recipes work beautifully as make-ahead options. The beef tenderloin can be prepped (herb-rubbed) and refrigerated overnight, then roasted on Father's Day. The Marsala sauce, mushroom risotto base, and chimichurri can all be made 1 day ahead. The fettuccine alfredo, scallops, salmon, and lobster tails should be cooked fresh the day-of for best texture. The cast iron steak (our #1 recipe) MUST be cooked fresh because of the resting and butter-basting requirements. For maximum make-ahead efficiency, choose a recipe with prep-able components.

Father's Day dinner for two is genuinely one of my favorite cooking occasions of the year because of how rare it is to have a quiet evening with just my husband while Saad and Zainab are away — and these 17 recipes are the collection that turns "we have the house to ourselves for one evening" into an actual memorable celebration rather than a panicked scaling-down of family-sized recipes.

My husband's request for cast iron steak (recipe #1) every single Father's Day has become a tradition I cherish, and Saad and Zainab have learned that "dad's special steak night" means they get to have their favorite dinner at Grandma's house, which has become a tradition they look forward to as well.

My mother in Pakistan would call this kind of intentional dinner-for-two a "khaas" (special) meal — the deliberate effort of scaling, plating, and presenting food for an audience of one or two rather than a family. The principle applied across her own kitchen when she cooked specifically for my father on his birthdays, and applies in mine now when I cook specifically for my husband on his.

Whether your Father's Day dinner is the cast iron steak at #1, the lobster tails at #2, the surf and turf at #4, or any of the other 13 options in this list — the key is matching the recipe to the actual dad in your life and the actual evening you want to create. Happy Father's Day to all the dads — and to the partners who make Father's Day feel like the celebration it should be. 🥩🦞🍷✨

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.
