Saad asked me to make this three summers in a row before I finally wrote it down. It's the kind of thing that disappears within an hour of hitting the table — cold, creamy, a little sweet, full of cherries and marshmallows — and every time someone asks me for the recipe I have to dig through my notes app to remember the proportions.

What I like about this cherry salad is that it's genuinely unfussy. You open a can, stir a few things together, and refrigerate it. That's it. I use cherry pie filling because it's consistent — the cherries are already sweet and the syrup thickens the base just enough. If you want to go fresh, I'll talk about that in the variations section, but for a last-minute summer dessert, the canned route is what I actually do.

I make a double batch when we're having people over because a single batch doesn't survive the first round of serving. It works on a dessert table next to something like my Cherry Cream Cheese Danish — people who love cherries go for both, and I love that for them. My husband likes this salad after a heavy grilled meal. Zainab eats the leftovers straight from the bowl the next morning and I pretend not to notice.

One thing to know before you start: this salad needs at least two hours in the fridge, ideally overnight. I made the mistake once of trying to serve it after 30 minutes and it was just a soupy mess — the marshmallows hadn't softened into the cream and the whole thing felt unfinished. Give it time. It rewards patience.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • No oven, no stove: This is a full no-bake situation, which matters a lot when it's 95°F outside and turning on the oven feels like a punishment. I pull this together in about 10 minutes of actual hands-on work. The fridge does the rest. On summer days when I'm already cooking something on the grill, this runs in the background with zero attention from me.

  • Pantry and freezer ingredients: Cherry pie filling, Cool Whip, condensed milk, marshmallows — these are things I can find at any Walmart or Aldi without a special trip. Nothing here is hard to source. If you're in the UK, the cherry pie filling is at most big supermarkets in the baking aisle, and Cool Whip has a near-equivalent in Elmlea whipped topping.

  • Make-ahead friendly: I almost always make this the night before I need it. It actually tastes better that way — the marshmallows soften slightly, the condensed milk and cream thicken together, and the whole thing gets this almost mousse-like consistency. Morning-of prep for a dinner party is my favorite way to handle it.

  • Kids go absolutely wild for it: I don't know if it's the cherries or the marshmallows or both, but Saad treats this like a legitimate dessert. When I serve it at birthday parties or summer cookouts, it's always the first bowl to empty. Adults eat it just as enthusiastically, which I appreciate.

  • Easy to scale up: Doubling this takes about 30 extra seconds of measuring. I've made a tripled batch for a big Eid gathering and it held up well in the fridge for two days. Just use a bigger bowl and you're set.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling
  • 1 cup whipped topping, such as Cool Whip (thawed if frozen)
  • 1 cup miniature marshmallows
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • ½ cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional, but it brightens everything up)

Directions

  1. Combine the base: In a large mixing bowl, stir together the cherry pie filling and sweetened condensed milk until fully combined. The condensed milk thickens the filling slightly and adds a rich, sweet base that holds everything together once chilled.
  2. Fold in the whipped topping: Add the Cool Whip and stir it in gently. You want it to be well incorporated but don't go at it too aggressively — folding keeps the mixture light and airy rather than dense.
  3. Add the rest: Gently fold in the miniature marshmallows, chopped nuts, and vanilla extract. If you're using lemon juice, add it now. Give everything one more gentle stir to make sure it's evenly distributed.
  4. Chill: Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, though overnight is genuinely better. The marshmallows soften just enough, the flavors come together, and the texture firms up into something that feels more like a dessert than a salad.
  5. Serve cold: Give it one gentle stir before serving. Spoon into a serving bowl or individual cups. Keep it cold until you're ready to eat — it doesn't hold up well sitting out in the heat for long.

Tips for Success

  • Drain your cherries if using fresh or frozen: If you substitute fresh or frozen cherries for the pie filling, make sure they're properly drained and patted dry. I once used frozen cherries straight from the bag after thawing and the liquid turned the whole salad pink and runny. Still tasted fine but it looked like a mess. Drain and dry them first.

  • Let the Cool Whip thaw fully before using: Cold, stiff whipped topping doesn't mix in smoothly — you end up with chunks of it floating through the salad. I leave mine on the counter for about 20 minutes before I start. Room temperature Cool Whip folds in cleanly and gives you that smooth, uniform texture.

  • Don't skip the vanilla: It sounds like a small thing but vanilla extract rounds out the sweetness in a way that makes the whole salad taste more intentional. Without it the condensed milk can taste a bit flat. One teaspoon is all it takes.

  • Add the nuts right before serving if you want crunch: I stir them in during assembly most of the time, but if you're making this a day ahead, the nuts can go a bit soft in the fridge overnight. If crunch matters to you, hold them back and toss them in right before serving. Either way it's good — it's just a texture preference.

  • Taste before you serve: Cherry pie fillings vary by brand — some are quite sweet, some are more tart. Taste the finished salad after it chills and adjust if needed. A little extra lemon juice can cut sweetness beautifully. A tiny pinch of salt does the same thing if you don't want more acidity.

Variations

  • Coconut cherry version: Stir in ½ cup of sweetened shredded coconut along with the marshmallows. It adds a chewiness that works really well against the soft cherries, and it leans tropical in a way that works perfectly for summer. My husband prefers this version — he says it tastes like something you'd eat at a beach shack, which is a compliment in our house.

  • Cherry pudding salad: Mix one small packet of instant vanilla pudding powder directly into the Cool Whip before folding it in. It thickens the base significantly and makes the texture closer to a mousse. This version holds up a little better if you're transporting it to a potluck — it doesn't get as loose over time.

  • Mixed fruit version: Add ½ cup of halved green grapes and a small can of drained mandarin oranges to the mix. The tartness of the grapes and citrus balances the sweetness of the cherries nicely. This is the version I make when I want it to feel a bit lighter — it also looks beautiful in a clear bowl with all the colors.

  • Lighter version: Use fat-free Cool Whip and light sweetened condensed milk. The texture is slightly thinner but the flavor is still there. I've made this for family members who are watching their sugar and no one complained — though I didn't announce the swap either. If you're pairing this with something already rich, like my Snowflake Oreo Cream Salad on a dessert table, this lighter version is a nice counterpoint.

  • Chocolate chip cherry salad: Fold in ¼ cup of mini chocolate chips at the end. This sounds strange but it works — cherry and chocolate is a classic pairing for a reason. The chips stay slightly firm after chilling and give you little pockets of chocolate in every bite. Zainab discovered this by accident when she snuck chips into her bowl and now it's a permanent option in our house.

Serving and Storage

Serving

Serve this cold, straight from the fridge. It works as a dessert on its own, but it also sits well alongside grilled mains — I've put it next to BBQ Sausage Bites at a cookout and the sweetness of the salad balances the smokiness of the meat nicely. Spoon it into individual cups or a large serving bowl. If you're taking it somewhere, keep it in a cooler — it doesn't hold its texture in the heat.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. By day 3, the marshmallows have gotten quite soft and the texture starts to break down. It's still edible but not at its best. I wouldn't freeze this — the whipped topping separates when frozen and thawed and the texture gets watery and unpleasant. Make what you'll actually eat within two days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh or frozen cherries instead of cherry pie filling?

Yes, but there's a step you can't skip: drain them really well. Frozen cherries especially release a lot of liquid as they thaw, and if that liquid gets into the salad it will make everything watery and thin. Pat them dry, and if using fresh, pit and halve them first. You'll also want to add a little extra sugar to compensate for the sweetness the pie filling would have provided — start with 2 tablespoons and taste as you go.

Can I make this cherry salad the day before?

Yes, and honestly I prefer it that way. The overnight rest lets the marshmallows soften slightly into the cream, the condensed milk thickens everything up, and the flavors settle into each other properly. Just keep it covered tightly in the fridge and give it a gentle stir before serving. If you're adding nuts and want them to stay crunchy, hold those back and fold them in right before serving.

Can I make this without marshmallows?

You can. The salad will be less sweet and have a smoother texture — more like a cherry cream than a fruit salad. Some people prefer it that way. You could replace the marshmallows with chopped nuts for texture, or with extra fruit like halved grapes. It's a different result but still good.

Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of Cool Whip?

Yes, but whip it to stiff peaks first, not soft. Soft whipped cream will deflate into the salad and make it runny. Stiff peaks hold their structure after folding. One thing to note: homemade whipped cream doesn't stabilize as well as Cool Whip over time, so the salad won't hold up quite as long in the fridge. Make it the same day or one day ahead max.

Can I freeze cherry salad?

I wouldn't. The whipped topping breaks down when frozen and the texture after thawing is watery and separated. It's not terrible if you freeze it and eat it semi-frozen like an ice cream, but as a creamy salad once thawed it won't look or taste right. Just make a smaller batch if you're worried about leftovers.

This cherry salad is one of those recipes I keep coming back to because it asks almost nothing of me and delivers something that everyone at the table actually wants to eat. There's no technique to master, no timing to stress over — you just stir, chill, and serve. For summer gatherings especially, that simplicity is worth a lot.

What I appreciate most is how well it holds its own next to heavier food. When we're doing a full cookout spread — grilled meat, sides, the works — this cherry salad sits at the end of the table and people come back to it repeatedly. It cuts through the richness of everything else without feeling like an afterthought.

If you're on a cherry kick, my Cherry Cream Cheese Danish is worth bookmarking for the weekend — different vibe entirely but the same cherry-forward approach. And if you love no-bake creamy desserts like this one, the Snowflake Oreo Cream Salad is another one my family asks for constantly.

Make it the night before, pull it out of the fridge cold, and watch it vanish. That's the whole plan. 🍒✨

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.
