These Homemade Heart-Shaped Strawberry Pop Tarts are a delightful and festive twist on the classic breakfast treat, perfect for celebrating Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or any occasion where you want to share a little love.

Imagine flaky, buttery pastry encasing a sweet and fruity strawberry jam filling and adorned with a charming heart cutout and a sweet glaze.

These pop tarts are not only delicious but also visually appealing, making them a thoughtful and impressive homemade gift or a delightful addition to any Valentine's Day breakfast or dessert spread.

They're surprisingly easy to make, especially if you use store-bought pie crust, and the heart shape adds a special touch that makes them extra memorable.

Why You'll Love This Recipe:

  • Romantic and Festive: The heart shape makes these pop tarts a perfect romantic gesture or a sweet treat for friends and family.

  • Flaky and Delicious: The use of pie crust (homemade or store-bought) creates perfectly flaky and buttery pastries.

  • Easy to Make: This recipe is simple, even for beginner bakers, especially if using a store-bought crust.

  • Homemade with Love: These pop tarts are a thoughtful and heartfelt gift, showing that you put time and effort into creating something special.

  • Customizable: You can customize the filling, glaze, and decorations to your liking.

Ingredients:

For the Pastry:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • ½ cup ice water
  • OR 2 (14.1 ounces) packages of refrigerated pie crusts

For the Filling:

  • 1 cup strawberry jam (or your favorite flavor)

For the Glaze (Optional):

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • Optional: red food coloring

Directions:

  • Step 1: Prepare the Pastry (or use store-bought)
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Gradually add the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together.

  • Don't overmix. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

  • Store-bought Pastry: Simply unroll the pie crusts.

  • Step 2: Cut the Pastry
Lightly flour a clean surface. Roll out the chilled pastry dough (or unroll store-bought crusts) to about ⅛-inch thickness.

  • Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter (about 3-4 inches wide) to cut out heart shapes. You'll need two hearts for each pop tart.

  • Step 3: Prepare the Filling
In a small bowl, stir the strawberry jam (or your chosen filling) to loosen it up.

  • Step 4: Assemble the Pop-Tarts
For each pop tart, place one heart-shaped pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  • Spread about 1 tablespoon of jam in the center of the heart, leaving a small border around the edges.

  • Step 5: Top and Seal
Place the second heart-shaped pastry on top of the filled heart. Gently press the edges together to seal, then crimp the edges with a fork.

  • Step 6: Bake
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the pop tarts for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Step 7: Make the Glaze (Optional)
While the pop tarts are baking, prepare the glaze, if desired.

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth and creamy.

  • Add a drop or two of red food coloring for a pink glaze.

  • Step 8: Decorate
Let the pop tarts cool slightly on the baking sheet before drizzling with the glaze, if using.

Serving and Storage:

Serving:

These Homemade Heart-Shaped Strawberry Pop Tarts are best served warm or at room temperature. They are perfect for sharing with loved ones on Valentine's Day or any other special occasion.

Storage:

  • Storing at Room Temperature: Store cooled pop tarts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

  • Refrigerating: For longer storage, store the pop tarts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Tips for Success:

  • Use Cold Pastry: Cold pie crust is easier to work with and will result in flakier pastries.

  • Don't Overfill: Don't overfill the pop tarts with jam, as it may leak out during baking.

  • Seal Well: Make sure to seal the edges of the pop tarts firmly to prevent the filling from leaking.

  • Use a Sharp Cookie Cutter: A sharp heart-shaped cookie cutter will make it easier to cut clean shapes in the pastry.

  • Bake Until Golden: Bake the pop tarts until they are golden brown for the best texture.

Variations:

  • Different Fillings: Use different fillings, such as other fruit jams, chocolate spread, or even a cream cheese filling.

  • Different Shapes: Use different cookie cutters to create different shapes.

  • Add Spices: Add spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the pastry dough for added flavor.

  • Sprinkles: Add sprinkles to the glaze for a festive touch.

  • Savory Version: Make a savory version with cheese and herbs for the filling.

FAQ:

Can I use a different type of pastry?

Yes, you can use other pastries, but pie crust is recommended for its flaky texture.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the pop tarts ahead of time and store them in the refrigerator until ready to bake.

How do I prevent my pop-tarts from being soggy?

Make sure to bake the pop tarts until they are golden brown, and use a thick jam filling.

Can I freeze the pop-tarts?

These Homemade Heart-Shaped Strawberry Pop Tarts are a delightful and easy treat that's perfect for expressing your love on Valentine's Day or any other special occasion.

The combination of flaky pastry, sweet jam filling, and charming heart shape is simply irresistible.

Whether you're baking them for a romantic gesture, a gift for friends, or just a sweet treat for yourself, these pop-tarts are sure to be a hit.

Ingredients

Crust

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • ¼ cup cold vegetable shortening, cut into cubes
  • ½ cup ice water

Filling

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and chopped
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Glaze (optional)

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Decorations (optional):

  • Sprinkles
  • Edible glitter
  • Red food coloring (for glaze)

Instructions

  • Make the crust: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter and shortening using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add the ice water, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Chill the crust: Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight.
  • Prepare the filling: In a medium saucepan, combine the chopped strawberries, granulated sugar, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the strawberries soften and release their juices, about 5-7 minutes. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of cold water to make a slurry. Add the cornstarch slurry to the strawberry mixture and cook, stirring constantly, until the filling thickens, about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
  • Assemble the pop tarts: On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of chilled dough to about ⅛ inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter (about 4 inches wide) to cut out shapes. Repeat with the second disc of dough.
  • Fill the pop tarts: Place half of the heart cutouts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of strawberry filling onto the center of each heart, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Seal the pop tarts: Brush the edges of the filled hearts with water. Top with the remaining heart cutouts and press the edges firmly to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork. You can also use a smaller heart cutter to make vent holes in the top of each tart.
  • Bake: Bake the pop tarts in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Make the glaze (optional): While the pop tarts are baking, prepare the glaze. Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Add red food coloring, if desired.
  • Glaze and decorate (optional): Once the pop tarts have cooled slightly, drizzle them with the glaze and decorate with sprinkles, edible glitter, or other toppings.

Notes

  • Dough Chilling: Chilling the dough is essential for a flaky crust. Don't skip this step!
  • Filling Consistency: The filling should be thick enough to stay inside the pop tarts during baking.
  • Sealing: Pressing the edges firmly and crimping with a fork will help to prevent the filling from leaking out.
  • Glaze: The glaze is optional, but it adds a nice touch of sweetness and decoration.
  • Storage: Store cooled pop tarts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

— Sana
