23 GAME DAY DESSERTS WITH FOOTBALL-THEMED DECORATIONS

Game day desserts have one requirement that separates them from regular desserts: they need to look like they were made for the occasion. A plain brownie is a plain brownie. A brownie with a football piped in white icing, or cut into a football shape and drizzled with chocolate laces, is a game day brownie — and the difference matters far more than the additional 5 minutes it took to decorate it.

Saad has been the primary dessert taster for this collection since he was seven years old. His evaluation criteria are: does it look like a football, does it have enough chocolate, and is there enough to eat after his sister has also eaten some. Zainab's criteria are: does it have icing, and is the icing the same colour as a team she is currently supporting (which changes weekly based on factors I cannot fully follow). Both criteria have been accommodated here.

The decorating techniques in this collection are all beginner-accessible: piping bags can be replaced by zip-lock bags with a corner snipped off, food colouring is available at any supermarket, and most of the themed shapes are achieved with cookie cutters or a sharp knife rather than specialist moulds. The effect is professional; the technique is achievable on a Saturday afternoon with two children helping.

23. Football Brownies

football brownies decorated chocolate icing game day themed easy crowd dessert batch

Dense, fudgy brownies cut into oval football shapes and decorated with white icing laces. The brownie recipe is the richest in this collection — plenty of butter, two types of chocolate, and a small amount of espresso powder that deepens the chocolate flavour without adding any coffee taste. The football shape is cut freehand with a sharp knife or using an oval cookie cutter.

Ingredients

  • For the brownies: 200g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), roughly chopped
  • 150g unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 3 large eggs plus 1 egg yolk
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 100g plain flour
  • 3 tablespoons good quality cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional — deepens chocolate)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • For decoration: 200g white royal icing or thick white buttercream
  • A piping bag or zip-lock bag with a small corner snipped off

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. Grease and line a 23x33cm baking tin with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat when smooth. Let cool 5 minutes.
  3. Whisk the eggs, extra yolk, and sugar together in a large bowl for 3 minutes until pale and slightly thickened. Add the vanilla.
  4. Pour the cooled chocolate into the egg mixture. Fold gently.
  5. Sift in the flour, cocoa, espresso powder, and salt. Fold until just combined — a few streaks of flour are fine.
  6. Pour into prepared tin. Bake 22 to 25 minutes until the top is set but the centre still has a slight wobble when shaken. Cool completely in the tin before cutting. Cut into oval football shapes and decorate with white icing laces.

22. Rice Crispy Football Treats

rice crispy treat football shaped game day dessert easy kids fun crowd party decorating

Rice crispy treats moulded into football shapes and decorated with white icing laces — the easiest and most structurally impressive game day dessert. Rice crispy treats hold a football shape better than cake or brownie because the mixture sets firm enough to carve without crumbling.

Ingredients

  • For the treats: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 400g marshmallows
  • 8 cups rice crispy cereal
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • For decoration: 200g white chocolate, melted
  • Optional: brown food colouring mixed into white chocolate (or use milk chocolate)
  • White royal icing for the laces

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add marshmallows. Stir until completely melted. Add vanilla and salt.
  2. Remove from heat. Add cereal. Stir quickly to coat.
  3. Press firmly into a greased 23x33cm tin. Press very firmly — loose pressing produces crumbly treats that break when cut.
  4. Cool completely (about 30 minutes). Cut into oval football shapes using a sharp knife or oval cookie cutter.
  5. Melt white chocolate and mix with a tiny amount of brown food colouring to approximate football leather colour. Dip or brush each treat.
  6. Pipe white icing laces across each football when the chocolate has set.

21. Football Cookie Platter

football shaped sugar cookie game day decorated royal icing team colours crowd party easy

Classic sugar cookies cut into football shapes, team jersey shapes, and number cookies — decorated with royal icing in team colours. Royal icing is the correct icing for sugar cookies because it dries hard and smooth, making the cookies stackable and portable.

Ingredients

  • For the cookies: 300g plain flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 170g unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the royal icing: 400g icing sugar
  • 3 tablespoons meringue powder (or 2 tablespoons pasteurised egg white)
  • 5 to 8 tablespoons cold water
  • Gel food colouring in team colours
  • Football-shaped cookie cutters

Instructions

  1. Beat butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla. Mix well.
  2. Add flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until dough just comes together.
  3. Wrap in cling film. Refrigerate 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. Roll dough to 5mm thick. Cut into football shapes.
  5. Bake on lined trays 10 to 12 minutes until very light gold at the edges — not browned.
  6. Cool completely. Make royal icing: beat icing sugar, meringue powder, and water until smooth and slightly stiff. Divide and colour. Flood cookies with base colour, then pipe details when dry.

20. Touchdown Cupcakes

touchdown cupcake game day football themed green grass frosting field goal post cupcake easy

Chocolate cupcakes decorated to look like a football field — green buttercream grass piped with a star tip, yellow fondant goalposts, white line markings, and a mini chocolate football made from a moulded truffle. Saad considers these the most successful game day dessert I have made, which is a high bar given the competition.

Ingredients

  • For the cupcakes: 240g plain flour
  • 300g caster sugar
  • 75g good quality cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 240ml whole milk
  • 120ml neutral oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 240ml hot coffee or water
  • For grass frosting: 500g unsalted butter, softened
  • 800g icing sugar
  • Green gel food colouring
  • For decorations: yellow fondant for goalposts
  • White royal icing for field markings
  • Small chocolate truffle or candy for the football

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. Line two 12-hole cupcake tins.
  2. Whisk all dry ingredients together. Whisk all wet ingredients (except hot coffee) separately.
  3. Combine wet and dry. Stir in the hot coffee last — the batter will be very liquid, which is correct.
  4. Fill cupcake cases ⅔ full. Bake 18 to 20 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. Cool completely.
  5. Make green buttercream: beat butter and icing sugar until fluffy. Add green gel colouring until bright green.
  6. Pipe grass using a star tip in a sweeping motion. Add fondant goalposts, white line markings, and a chocolate football on top of each.

19. Chocolate Football Truffles

chocolate truffle football game day dessert decorated cocoa powder easy crowd no bake party

Dark chocolate ganache truffles rolled in cocoa powder and shaped slightly oval to resemble footballs, decorated with white chocolate laces. Truffles are the most portable game day dessert because they do not require plates or cutlery and hold at room temperature for hours.

Ingredients

  • For the ganache: 300g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), very finely chopped
  • 200ml double cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon whisky, rum, or orange juice (optional)
  • For decoration: cocoa powder for rolling
  • White chocolate, melted, for piping laces

Instructions

  1. Heat cream to just below boiling. Pour over the chopped chocolate. Let sit 2 minutes without stirring.
  2. Stir from the centre outward until completely smooth. Add butter and spirit if using.
  3. Refrigerate 2 hours until the ganache is firm enough to scoop.
  4. Use a melon baller or small spoon to scoop portions. Roll quickly in your hands into a slightly oval shape.
  5. Roll in cocoa powder. Place on a lined tray. Refrigerate 30 minutes to set firmly.
  6. Pipe white chocolate laces across each truffle when set.

18. Game Day Decorated Cupcakes (Team Colours)

game day cupcake team colour buttercream decorated football crowd easy party batch bake

Vanilla cupcakes decorated in your team's colours — split buttercream dyed in two team colours and piped in a swirled rosette pattern so both colours appear on every cupcake. The colour swirl effect is achieved by placing both colours side by side in one piping bag before piping.

Ingredients

  • For vanilla cupcakes: 200g plain flour
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 115g unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 120ml whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For buttercream: 250g unsalted butter, softened
  • 500g icing sugar
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Gel food colouring in two team colours

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.
  2. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Add alternately with milk. Add vanilla.
  3. Fill cupcake cases ⅔ full. Bake 18 to 20 minutes. Cool completely.
  4. Make buttercream: beat butter until pale. Add icing sugar and milk gradually. Add vanilla.
  5. Divide in half. Colour each half a different team colour.
  6. Place both colours side by side in a large piping bag. Pipe a rosette on each cupcake — both colours appear in the swirl.

17. Football Field Sheet Cake

football field sheet cake green frosting white markings game day crowd easy large batch

A full-sized sheet cake decorated to look like a football field — green frosting with white yard lines, end zone markings, and fondant or chocolate goal posts. The easiest version of a themed large-format game day dessert because the flat surface of a sheet cake is the ideal canvas for the field decoration.

Ingredients

  • For the cake: Use 2 batches of the chocolate cupcake batter (recipe #20) baked in a 33x48cm (half-sheet) pan for 30 to 35 minutes at 175°C/350°F
  • For the frosting: 500g unsalted butter, softened
  • 900g icing sugar
  • Green gel food colouring
  • 4 to 6 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • White royal icing for yard line markings
  • Yellow fondant or card for goalposts

Instructions

  1. Bake the sheet cake. Cool completely — at least 2 hours.
  2. Make green buttercream: beat butter, icing sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add green food colouring until bright grass-green.
  3. Spread buttercream evenly over the entire surface of the cooled cake.
  4. Pipe white royal icing yard lines across the width of the cake every 3cm to suggest yard markings.
  5. Pipe 'END ZONE' at each short end. Add numbers (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) along the side.
  6. Insert yellow fondant or card-paper goalposts into the ends. Serve sliced into portions directly from the pan.

16. Oreo Football Pops

Oreo cookie pop football dipped chocolate decorated game day crowd party no bake easy kids

Oreos on lollipop sticks, dipped in chocolate and decorated as footballs — no baking required, endlessly customisable, and Saad's favourite dessert activity because the decoration step is achievable at age 10 with very satisfying results.

Ingredients

  • 24 Oreo cookies
  • 200g milk or dark chocolate, melted
  • White chocolate or royal icing, for laces
  • 24 lollipop sticks or thick skewers
  • Parchment-lined tray for setting

Instructions

  1. Insert a lollipop stick carefully into the cream filling of each Oreo — twist gently so the stick is securely embedded in the cream without breaking the cookie.
  2. Dip each Oreo pop into the melted chocolate, letting the excess drip off.
  3. Place on the parchment-lined tray.
  4. While the chocolate is still wet, use a toothpick to create a slightly elongated oval at each end of the cookie — gently pressing to achieve a football shape effect in the still-soft chocolate.
  5. Allow the chocolate to set completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
  6. Using melted white chocolate or royal icing in a piping bag, pipe the classic football laces: one vertical line and three perpendicular short horizontal lines.

15. Pretzel Football Rods

pretzel rod dipped chocolate decorated football game day crowd easy no bake party snack

Long pretzel rods dipped in chocolate and decorated with white chocolate icing laces — the salty-sweet game day snack that bridges the gap between dessert and snack. The pretzel's length makes the football shape and the lace decoration particularly effective.

Ingredients

  • 24 long pretzel rods
  • 200g milk chocolate, melted
  • White chocolate or white royal icing, for laces
  • Sprinkles in team colours (optional)
  • Parchment paper for setting

Instructions

  1. Melt the milk chocolate in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or in the microwave at 30-second intervals.
  2. Dip each pretzel rod into the chocolate, covering about two-thirds of the length. Let the excess drip off by tapping gently.
  3. Place on parchment paper to set. Do not refrigerate immediately — room temperature setting produces glossier chocolate.
  4. When the chocolate has fully set, pipe white chocolate or royal icing laces: three or four curved parallel lines across the chocolate portion of each rod.
  5. Allow the lace decoration to set completely before packing.
  6. Stand in a jar or glass for display, or lay flat in a single layer in a box.

14. Football Cake Pops

cake pop football shaped decorated game day crowd party easy batch no specialist mould

Cake pops shaped into football ovals — crumbled cake mixed with frosting and rolled into football shapes, then dipped in chocolate and decorated with icing laces. Cake pops transport better than cupcakes or sliced cake because each one is self-contained and sealed in chocolate.

Ingredients

  • For the cake base: 1 baked and cooled chocolate cake (any recipe, or from a box mix)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons chocolate buttercream or cream cheese frosting
  • For coating: 300g dark or milk chocolate, melted
  • White chocolate or royal icing for laces
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Parchment-lined tray

Instructions

  1. Crumble the cooled cake completely into fine crumbs in a large bowl.
  2. Add frosting 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing with your hands, until the mixture holds together when pressed but is not wet. The right consistency is like modelling clay.
  3. Roll into oval (football) shapes, each about 4cm long.
  4. Insert a lollipop stick into each, pushing in about halfway.
  5. Refrigerate 1 hour until firm.
  6. Dip each pop into melted chocolate. Let excess drip off. Set on parchment. When set, pipe white laces.

13. Halftime Brownies (Cream Cheese Swirl)

cream cheese swirl brownie game day halftime crowd dessert easy rich decorated batch bake

Fudgy chocolate brownies with a cream cheese swirl — baked in a single tin and cut into squares. The cream cheese swirl creates a visual marbling effect that looks decorative without any additional effort and tastes significantly better than a plain brownie.

Ingredients

  • Brownie layer: 150g dark chocolate, 115g butter, 2 eggs, 150g sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 70g flour, ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Cream cheese layer: 225g cream cheese, 60g sugar, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  4. Pour ¾ of brownie batter into tin. Spoon cream cheese mixture over in dollops.
  5. Spoon remaining brownie batter in dollops between the cream cheese.
  6. Swirl with a knife or skewer to create a marbled effect. Bake 28 to 32 minutes until just set. Cool completely. Drizzle white chocolate in a lace pattern for game day decoration.

12. Scoring Sundae Bar

sundae bar game day dessert crowd self-serve interactive fun easy kids adults football party

A self-serve sundae bar as the game day dessert — ice cream scoops in team colours (using food colouring in vanilla ice cream or choosing appropriate flavours), football-themed toppings in small labelled bowls, and chocolate sauce in squeeze bottles. The sundae bar format is the dessert equivalent of the dip table: interactive, customisable, and producing more excitement than a plated dessert.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 tubs of vanilla ice cream, softened enough to mix in colouring
  • Gel food colouring in team colours (stir into softened ice cream, refreeze)
  • Or: chocolate ice cream (brown = football field) and vanilla (cream = field markings)
  • For the toppings bar: chocolate fudge sauce in a squeeze bottle
  • Caramel sauce
  • Whipped cream in a can
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Oreo crumbles
  • Sprinkles in team colours
  • Crushed pretzels
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Football-shaped gummy sweets or candy (if available)

Instructions

  1. Prepare coloured ice cream the night before: soften vanilla ice cream until spreadable, stir in gel food colouring, refreeze until firm.
  2. Set up the sundae bar 30 minutes before serving: bowls, spoons, and napkins at the start of the line.
  3. Set out ice cream tubs with scoops. Arrange toppings in small bowls in a logical order (sauce first, then dry toppings, then cream).
  4. Label each topping bowl.
  5. Squeeze bottles for sauces are neater than spooning — fill bottles the morning of.
  6. Announce the sundae bar at halftime for maximum enthusiasm.

11. Team Colour Jelly Cups

team colour jelly gelatin cup game day easy dessert no bake crowd kids party football

Jelly/gelatin cups in two team colours, layered and set in clear plastic cups so both colours are visible through the side. The two-tone effect is achieved by setting the first colour completely before adding the second, so they do not blend. The cups are transparent to show off the colour layers.

Ingredients

  • 2 packets (each 85g) jelly/gelatin in two different team colours (or the closest available)
  • Boiling water as per packet instructions for each colour
  • Whipped cream in a can, to top
  • Team-coloured sprinkles or sweets on top
  • Clear plastic cups (250ml size)

Instructions

  1. Make the first colour jelly according to packet instructions. Allow to cool to room temperature — not cold, just cool.
  2. Pour about 3cm of the first colour into each cup. Refrigerate until completely set, at least 2 hours.
  3. Make the second colour jelly. Allow to cool to room temperature — not warm, or it will melt the first layer.
  4. Pour the second colour carefully over the set first layer. Refrigerate at least 2 hours until fully set.
  5. Top each cup with whipped cream just before serving.
  6. Add team-coloured sprinkles or sweets on top. Serve with small spoons.

A sheet cake decorated to look like a scoreboard — frosted in a neutral colour with HOME and AWAY scores written in fondant letters, a clock, and team names. The scores can be left blank and filled in by guests at the end of the game, making the cake an interactive element of the gathering.

Ingredients

  • 1 batch sheet cake (baked in a 33x48cm pan — use the sheet cake recipe from #17)
  • For frosting: 500g butter, 900g icing sugar, 4 to 6 tablespoon milk, black or dark grey gel food colouring

  • Small chocolate oval sweets for the football

Instructions

  1. Bake and cool the chocolate cupcakes.

  4. Pipe white icing lines across the green surface to suggest yard markings.
  5. Insert a goalpost structure into each cupcake — either fondant or pretzel.

1. End Zone Cookie Bars

end zone cookie bar M&M team colour crowd easy game day dessert batch bake simple large

Large cookie bars baked in a sheet pan and cut into squares — studded with M&Ms in team colours for a simple, effective game day visual. The cookie bar format is more practical than individual cookies for a crowd because one bake produces 24 to 30 portions with minimal effort.

Ingredients

  • 340g unsalted butter, melted
  • 400g brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 3 large eggs plus 1 yolk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 450g plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 300g chocolate chips
  • 200g M&M candies in two team colours (sort the bag and pick out the right colours)
  • Extra M&Ms for pressing on top

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C/350°F. Grease and line a 33x48cm (half-sheet) pan.
  2. Whisk melted butter with both sugars until smooth. Add eggs and extra yolk. Add vanilla.
  3. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until just combined.
  4. Fold in chocolate chips and M&Ms in team colours.
  5. Press into prepared pan in an even layer.
  6. Press extra team-colour M&Ms decoratively across the top. Bake 25 to 30 minutes until golden at the edges and just set in the centre. Cool before cutting into squares.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the easiest game day desserts to decorate?

Rice crispy treats (mould into football shapes before they set, then decorate), brownies (cut into ovals and pipe icing laces), and Oreo pops (dip in chocolate and pipe laces) are all beginner-accessible. The techniques require only a piping bag or zip-lock bag with a corner snipped and a bit of patience — no specialist decorating tools.

How far ahead can I make game day desserts?

Cookies and brownies: 2 days ahead, stored in an airtight container. Cake pops and truffles: 3 days ahead, refrigerated. No-bake cheesecake: 1 day ahead, refrigerated. Cookie dough bites: 5 days ahead, refrigerated. Rice crispy treats: 1 day ahead (they soften over time). Cupcakes: same day is best for frosting; the cake itself can be baked 1 day ahead.

What food colouring should I use for team colours?

Gel food colouring produces the most vivid results and does not change the texture of buttercream or royal icing. Liquid food colouring is less vivid and can make buttercream too soft. For very dark colours (navy, burgundy, black), gel is essential — use a significant amount and allow the colour to deepen over 30 minutes before adjusting.

How do I pipe football laces if I do not own piping bags?

Fill a zip-lock sandwich bag with royal icing or melted white chocolate. Seal tightly. Snip a very small corner off one bottom corner of the bag. The smaller the snip, the thinner the line. Practice the lace pattern on a piece of parchment paper before piping on the actual desserts — the pattern is: one vertical line and three or four short horizontal lines crossing it.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

— Sana
