They’re a fun and unique twist on classic cinnamon rolls and perfect for special occasions, weekend baking, or simply treating yourself. The cream cheese topping adds a tangy richness that pairs beautifully with the sweetness of the ube.

  • Crowd-Pleasing Treat: Sweet, colourful, and indulgent—everyone from kids to adults will ask for seconds of these ube cinnamon rolls.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup ube halaya (purple yam jam)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For Filling:

  • ⅓ cup softened butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

For Frosting:

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

  • Step No.1: Activate the yeast
In a bowl, combine warm milk and sugar, sprinkle in yeast, and let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

  • Step No.2: Mix dough ingredients
Add softened butter, egg, ube halaya, vanilla, salt, and flour. Mix and knead until a smooth dough forms.

  • Step No.3: Let dough rise
Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  • Step No.4: Prepare the filling
In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside. Grease a baking dish.

  • Step No.5: Roll and fill
Roll dough into a rectangle, spread with softened butter, and sprinkle cinnamon sugar evenly over it.

  • Step No.6: Slice and rise again
Roll into a log, slice into 12 rolls, place in dish, and let rise another 30 minutes.

  • Step No.7: Bake and cool
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden. Cool slightly before frosting.

  • Step No.8: Make frosting
Whisk cream cheese, butter, sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Spread over warm rolls.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

  • Warm milk temperature matters: Use milk around 110°F—too hot can kill the yeast, while too cold won’t activate it properly.

  • Don't rush the rise time: Allowing the dough to rise fully ensures your rolls bake up light, airy, and perfectly soft.

  • Use room-temperature ingredients: Softened butter and cream cheese blend better for smoother dough and lump-free frosting.

  • Roll the dough evenly: Keeping thickness consistent helps rolls bake uniformly, avoiding burnt edges or undercooked centres.

  • Grease your pan well: Prevents sticking and gives your rolls a golden, slightly crisp base for extra texture.

  • Cool slightly before frosting: Spreading cream cheese on hot rolls can melt it—wait a few minutes to keep the topping neat.

  • Freeze for later: You can freeze unbaked or baked rolls and reheat for a quick, freshly baked treat anytime.

VARIATIONS

  • Ube Macapuno Rolls: Add shredded macapuno (sweet coconut) to the filling for added chewiness and a more authentic Filipino flavour.

  • Nutty Ube Swirl: Sprinkle chopped toasted pecans or walnuts inside the filling before rolling for a crunchy contrast to the soft bread.

  • Ube Cream Cheese Glaze: Mix a bit of ube extract or halaya into your frosting for a purple, flavourful twist that’s eye-catching.

  • Matcha Ube Fusion: Add a bit of matcha powder to the dough for a gorgeous green swirl that contrasts beautifully with the purple filling.

  • Mini Rolls: Cut the rolls smaller for bite-sized treats—perfect for dessert platters or afternoon tea parties.

  • No Frosting Needed: Serve plain with a dusting of powdered sugar if you want a lighter, less rich version of the rolls.

  • Coconut Frosting: Replace milk in the frosting with coconut milk to create a tropical variation that enhances the ube flavour.

SERVING AND STORAGE

Serving

Serve warm from the oven with extra frosting on top and a hot cup of coffee or tea.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.

FAQ

Can I use store-bought ube halaya?

Yes, store-bought works great and saves time. Just ensure it's not too watery.

Can I freeze the unbaked rolls?

Yes, freeze after slicing. Thaw overnight and bake the next day.

What if I don't have instant yeast?

Use active dry yeast and proof it in warm milk before adding.

Can I use a stand mixer?

Definitely! It makes kneading the dough easier and quicker.

Is ube the same as taro?

No, ube is purple yam and sweeter, while taro is more starchy and mild.

These decadent ube cinnamon rolls bring together soft, fluffy dough and the bold, nutty sweetness of purple yam for a truly unique twist on a classic treat.

Each bite is filled with warm cinnamon and finished with creamy, tangy frosting that complements the natural ube flavour beautifully.

Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned baker, this recipe is easy to follow and delivers results that feel gourmet.

Warm from the oven, with that cream cheese glaze melting over the top, these rolls are more than just eye candy—they’re comfort food in every sense.

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

— Sana
