  • Easy to Make: Simple steps with common ingredients make this jelly accessible for beginners and busy home cooks alike.

  • Great for Gifts: Homemade jelly jars make thoughtful and delicious gifts perfect for holidays, parties, or special occasions.

  • Versatile Use: Spread on crackers, toast, or use as a glaze on meats, adding zesty flavour to your meals.

  • Bright Color and Texture: Fresh cranberries give a beautiful red color, while pectin ensures a smooth, shiny jelly texture.

  • Customizable Heat Level: Easily adjust the type and amount of peppers to match your preferred spice intensity.

  • Long Shelf Life: Can be refrigerated or frozen, allowing you to enjoy this tasty jelly well beyond cranberry season.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup finely chopped hot peppers (jalapeño or serrano)
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 package fruit pectin (1.75 oz)
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

DIRECTIONS

  • Step No.1: Prepare jars and ingredients
Sterilize canning jars and lids by boiling them. Rinse fresh cranberries and chop peppers finely, removing seeds if less heat is desired.

  • Step No.2: Cook cranberries and peppers
In a large saucepan, combine cranberries, chopped peppers, and water. Bring to a boil and cook until cranberries burst, about 10 minutes.

  • Step No.3: Add sugar and pectin
Stir in sugar until dissolved. Add fruit pectin gradually, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring mixture back to a boil.

  • Step No.4: Boil for jelly setting
Boil hard for 1 minute while stirring continuously. Remove from heat and stir in apple cider vinegar.

  • Step No.5: Jar the jelly
Ladle hot jelly into sterilized jars, leaving ¼-inch headspace. Wipe jar rims, seal with lids and bands.

  • Step No.6: Process jars in boiling water bath
Submerge jars in boiling water for 10 minutes to seal. Remove and let cool undisturbed for 24 hours.

  • Step No.7: Store or refrigerate
Check seals; store sealed jars in a cool, dark place or refrigerate after opening.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

  • Use fresh cranberries: Fresh berries provide better flavor and natural pectin for perfect jelly setting.

  • Remove seeds from peppers: Seeds add extra heat; remove them for milder jelly if preferred.

  • Sterilize jars well: Clean jars prevent contamination and ensure longer shelf life for your jelly.

  • Stir constantly during boiling: Prevents burning and ensures even cooking and proper pectin activation.

  • Check jelly consistency: Always test jelly on a cold plate before jar filling for the right thickness.

  • Adjust sugar for taste: You can reduce sugar slightly but keep enough for preservation and texture.

  • Label jars: Date your jars to track freshness and rotation in your pantry or fridge.

VARIATIONS

  • Use different peppers: Try red chili or serrano peppers to vary the spice level and flavour profile.

  • Add orange zest: A teaspoon of orange zest adds a bright citrus note that complements the cranberries.

  • Make it spicier: Include jalapeño seeds or add a pinch of cayenne for more heat.

  • Use honey instead of sugar: Substitute honey for a natural sweetener with a unique floral flavor.

  • Add ginger benefits: Fresh grated ginger adds warmth and complexity to the jelly’s taste.

  • Make a low-sugar version: Use low-sugar pectin and reduce sugar for a healthier alternative.

  • Try different vinegar: Apple cider vinegar can be replaced with white vinegar for a sharper tang.

SERVING AND STORAGE

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

— Sana
