The Neapolitan Cake is a celebration of classic flavors and an eye-catching presentation.

This delightful dessert showcases the harmonious trio of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, reminiscent of the beloved Neapolitan ice cream.

Imagine three distinct layers of moist and flavorful cake, each representing one of these iconic flavors, artfully swirled together to create a visually stunning and delicious treat.

It's a feast for both the eyes and the palate, offering a symphony of tastes and textures that will tantalize your senses.

This cake is perfect for birthdays, special occasions, or any time you want to create a dessert that's as beautiful as it is delicious.

This recipe provides a comprehensive guide to baking and assembling this impressive cake, ensuring a perfect and flavorful outcome every time.

Ingredients:

For the Cake Layers:

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup strawberry puree (or mashed fresh strawberries)

For the Frosting:

  • Your favorite frosting recipe (buttercream, cream cheese frosting, etc.) or store-bought frosting

Directions:

  • Step 1: Prepare the Cake Batter
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

  • Step 2: Divide and Flavor the Batter
Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. In one bowl, stir in the cocoa powder.

  • In another bowl, stir in the strawberry puree (or mashed strawberries). The third bowl will remain vanilla.

  • Step 3: Swirl the Batter
Spoon alternating dollops of the three batters into the prepared cake pans.

  • Use a knife or toothpick to swirl the batters together, creating a marbled effect.

  • Step 4: Bake the Cakes
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto wire racks to cool completely.

  • Step 5: Frost and Assemble
Once the cakes are completely cooled, frost them with your favorite frosting.

  • You can use three different colors of frosting to match the cake layers or use a single color for a more unified look.

Serving and Storage:

Serving:

Neapolitan Cake is best served at room temperature. It's a beautiful and delicious dessert for any occasion.

Storage:

  • Refrigerating: Store leftover cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Tips for Success:

  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Use room temperature butter, eggs, and milk for a smooth and even batter.

  • Don't Overmix: Overmixing the batter can result in a tough cake. Mix until just combined.

  • Cool Completely: Allow the cakes to cool completely before frosting them to prevent the frosting from melting.

  • Swirl Gently: Swirl the batters gently to create a marbled effect without overmixing.

  • Use Quality Frosting: A good quality frosting will enhance the flavor and appearance of the cake.

Variations:

  • Different Flavors: Experiment with different flavor combinations, such as chocolate-vanilla-caramel or lemon-raspberry-blueberry.

  • Ombre Cake: Create an ombre effect by using different shades of the same color for each layer.

  • Layer Cake: Instead of swirling the batters, layer the different colored batters on top of each other for a striped effect.

  • Cupcakes: Use the same batter and techniques to make Neapolitan cupcakes.

  • Different Frosting: Use different types of frosting, such as ganache, glaze, or whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 1 box (15.25 ounce) white cake mix
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup strawberry puree (or mashed strawberries)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: Food coloring (pink, brown)

Instructions

  • Prepare the cake pan: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  • Divide the batter: In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth. Divide the batter into three equal portions.
  • Flavor each portion:
Vanilla Layer: Leave one portion of batter as is (vanilla).
Chocolate Layer: Add the cocoa powder to the second portion of batter and mix well.
Strawberry Layer: Add the strawberry puree (or mashed strawberries) to the third portion of batter and mix well. You may need to add a drop or two of pink food coloring to enhance the color.
  • Bake the layers: Pour each portion of batter into a separate prepared cake pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the buttercream frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating on low speed at first, then increasing to medium speed. Add the milk and vanilla extract and beat until light and fluffy. If desired, divide the frosting and tint some pink and some light brown with food coloring.
  • Assemble the cake: Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer (your choice of flavor) on a cake plate or stand. Spread a layer of buttercream frosting over the top. Add the second cake layer (a different flavor) and spread with more frosting. Top with the final cake layer and frost the entire cake with the remaining buttercream.
  • Decorate: Decorate the cake as desired. You can create a swirl effect with the different frosting colors, add sprinkles, or pipe decorative borders.
  • Chill: Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving. This will help the frosting to set.

Notes

  • Cake Mix: Using a cake mix makes this recipe easier, but you can also use a scratch cake recipe.
  • Flavorings: You can adjust the flavorings to your liking. For example, you could add a little almond extract to the vanilla layer or use a different fruit puree for the strawberry layer.
  • Frosting: You can use store-bought frosting instead of making your own buttercream.
  • Layer Order: You can arrange the cake layers in any order you like.
  • Decorating: Get creative with your decorating! Consider using fresh berries or chocolate shavings.
  • Storage: Store the cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

— Sana
