Imagine a weeknight dinner that's bursting with bright, zesty flavors, incredibly tender chicken, crisp-tender green beans, and requires just one pan for cooking. That's the magic of the Lemon Garlic Butter Chicken and Green Beans Skillet!

This recipe delivers a complete, balanced meal, making it an absolute lifesaver for busy evenings when you crave something delicious. The final touch of fresh lemon brightens everything, tying the entire dish together with a vibrant finish.

This makes it a nutritious choice that doesn't compromise on the deeply satisfying, robust flavors we all crave. This dish truly shines because of its simplicity and the powerful flavor combination of lemon, garlic, and butter.

This recipe is also incredibly versatile. As the chicken sears in the skillet, it develops a beautiful golden crust, while the green beans are tossed in the same flavorful pan juices, absorbing all the aromatic goodness.

Beyond its ease, the Lemon garlic butter chicken and Green Beans Skillet is a wonderfully wholesome meal. It's packed with lean protein from the chicken, essential vitamins and fiber from the green beans, and healthy fats from the olive oil.

WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS RECIPE

  • One-Pan Convenience: Everything cooks in a single skillet, dramatically reducing cleanup time and making it ideal for busy weeknights.

  • Bright & Zesty Flavor: The combination of lemon, garlic, and butter creates a vibrant, incredibly delicious sauce that coats the chicken and beans.

  • Healthy & Balanced: Packed with lean daily protein needs from chicken and essential nutrients from green beans, providing a wholesome and satisfying meal.

  • Quick to Prepare: With minimal prep and hands-on cooking time, you can have a flavorful dinner on the table in under 30 minutes.

  • Tender & Juicy Chicken: Searing the chicken first locks in moisture, ensuring it stays succulent and flavorful.

  • Crisp-Tender Green Beans: The green beans cook perfectly in the same pan, absorbing all the savory pan drippings.

  • Customizable: Easily adaptable with other vegetables or herbs to suit your preferences.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • ½ teaspoon salt, divided
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper, divided
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4-5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (from about ½ lemon)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)
  • Lemon slices for garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS

  • Step No.1: Sear the Chicken
Heat the benefits of olive oil in a large (10-12 inch) skillet over medium-high heat. Season the chicken pieces with ¼ teaspoon salt and ⅛ teaspoon black pepper.

  • Add the chicken to the hot skillet in a single layer (cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding). Sear for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

  • Step No.2: Sauté Green Beans & Garlic
Reduce the heat to medium. Add 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter to the same skillet, allowing it to melt.

  • Add the trimmed green beans and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are bright green and crisp-tender.

  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute, stirring constantly, until fragrant.

  • Step No.3: Deglaze and Build Sauce
Pour in the chicken broth, scraping the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon to loosen any browned bits (these bits add immense flavor!). Bring the broth to a gentle simmer.

  • Step No.4: Combine & Finish
Stir the cooked chicken pieces back into the skillet with the green beans and sauce.

  • Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, the fresh lemon juice, and the remaining ¼ teaspoon salt and ⅛ teaspoon black pepper.

  • Stir gently until the butter has melted and coated the chicken and beans.

  • Step No.5: Serve Hot
Remove from heat. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and optional lemon slices. Serve the Lemon Garlic Butter Chicken and Green Beans Skillet immediately.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

  • Don't Overcrowd the Pan: When searing chicken, cook in batches if needed. Overcrowding lowers the pan temperature, leading to steamed instead of beautifully seared chicken.

  • Hot Skillet for Searing: Ensure your skillet is hot before adding the chicken. This creates a good crust and locks in juices.

  • Fresh Garlic & Lemon: Use fresh garlic and lemon juice for the best, brightest flavors. Bottled alternatives simply won't yield the same vibrant taste.

  • Crisp-Tender Green Beans: Cook the green beans until they are bright green and still have a slight bite. Overcooked green beans will become mushy.

  • Scrape the Fond: The browned bits at the bottom of the pan after searing the chicken are packed with flavor. Use a wooden spoon to scrape them up when you add the chicken broth; this is called "deglazing" and adds incredible depth to your sauce.

  • Adjust Seasoning: Always taste the finished dish and adjust salt and pepper to your preference. A final squeeze of lemon juice before serving can also brighten the flavors.

  • Don't Overcook Chicken: chicken breasts cook quickly. Once they're golden brown and cooked through (165°F/74°C internal temperature), remove them to prevent drying out. They'll warm through again when added back to the skillet.

VARIATIONS

  • Add Other Veggies: Stir in cherry tomatoes during the last few minutes of cooking, or add sliced mushrooms with the green beans.

  • Spicy Kick: A pinch of red pepper flakes added with the garlic will give a subtle heat.

  • Herb Swap: Experiment with fresh dill, oregano, or thyme instead of or in addition to parsley.

  • Creamy Sauce: Stir in ¼ cup of heavy cream with the chicken broth for a richer, more luxurious sauce.

  • Parmesan Infusion: Sprinkle ¼ cup of grated Parmesan cheese over the dish during the last minute of cooking, or just before serving.

  • Nutty Crunch: Add a sprinkle of toasted slivered almonds over the top for extra texture.

  • Asparagus Swap: Replace green beans with fresh asparagus spears for a different green vegetable option.

SERVING AND STORAGE

Serving:

Serve Lemon garlic butter chicken and Green Beans Skillet hot, straight from the pan. It's a complete meal on its own, but can be excellent served with a side of quinoa, couscous, or crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce.

Storage:

Store leftover Lemon Garlic Butter Chicken and Green Beans Skillet in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

FAQ

Can I use frozen green beans?

Yes, you can. Add them directly to the skillet from frozen after cooking the chicken. They might release more water, so you might need to cook them a bit longer to evaporate excess moisture before adding the broth.

What if I don't have chicken broth?

You can substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth or even water, though chicken broth will provide the best depth of flavor.

Can I use chicken tenders instead of breasts/thighs?

Yes, chicken tenders work well. Since they are smaller, their cooking time for searing will be reduced, likely to 2-3 minutes per side.

How do I know if the chicken is cooked through?

The safest way is to use a meat thermometer. Chicken is fully cooked when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). The pieces should also be opaque throughout.

Can I prepare any part of this in advance?

You can chop the chicken and trim the green beans a day ahead and store them in the refrigerator. Minced garlic can also be prepped. This will further reduce your active cooking time on a busy night.

The Lemon Garlic butter chicken and Green Beans Skillet is a testament to the power of simple, fresh ingredients expertly combined in a single pan.

This recipe delivers a harmonious blend of zesty, savory flavors, tender chicken, and crisp-tender green beans, making it an absolute weeknight hero.

The efficiency of cooking everything in one skillet is a true game-changer, allowing you to create a complete and balanced meal without a mountain of dishes.

So, if you're looking for a go-to dinner that's bursting with vibrant taste and requires minimal fuss, dive into the wonderful world of Lemon Garlic butter chicken and Green Beans Skillet.

Ingredients

  • Boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • Green beans trimmed
  • Olive oil
  • Butter
  • Garlic minced
  • Chicken broth
  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Fresh parsley chopped
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Optional: Red pepper flakes lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

Prepare Chicken:

  • Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels. If they are very thick, slice them horizontally to create thinner cutlets or pound them gently to about ¾-inch thickness for even cooking.
  • Season both sides of the chicken generously with salt and black pepper.

Sear Chicken:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large (10-12 inch) skillet (preferably oven-safe if you want to finish in the oven, otherwise a regular large skillet is fine) over medium-high heat.
  • Add the seasoned chicken to the hot skillet. Sear for 4-6 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature reaches 165°F/74°C). If using thicker breasts, they might not be fully cooked; that's okay, they will finish cooking with the green beans.
  • Remove chicken from the skillet and set aside on a plate. Cover loosely with foil to keep warm.

Sauté Green Beans:

  • Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil (and 1 tablespoon of butter, if desired, for richness) to the same skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the trimmed green beans to the skillet. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are crisp-tender and slightly bright green.

Make Lemon Garlic Butter Sauce:

  • Push the green beans to one side of the skillet. Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the empty side of the pan. Once melted, add the minced garlic and cook for 30-60 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  • Pour in the chicken broth and fresh lemon juice. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, stirring to combine with the garlic and butter.
  • Season the sauce with salt and black pepper to taste. If you like a little kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes.

Combine and Finish:

  • Return the cooked chicken breasts to the skillet, nestling them among the green beans and coating them in the sauce. If your chicken wasn't fully cooked, it will finish cooking through in the simmering sauce.
  • Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes, spooning the sauce over the chicken and green beans, allowing the flavors to meld and the chicken to absorb more sauce.
  • Stir in the fresh chopped parsley.

Serve:

  • Remove the skillet from heat. Garnish with fresh lemon slices, if desired.
  • Serve immediately. This dish is great on its own or paired with rice, quinoa, or mashed potatoes to soak up the delicious sauce.

Notes

  • Chicken Thickness: Pounding chicken breasts to an even thickness ensures they cook quickly and evenly.
  • Green Beans: Fresh green beans are recommended for the best texture. Frozen green beans can be used, but may cook faster and be softer.
  • Lemon Freshness: Freshly squeezed lemon juice makes a significant difference in the brightness of the sauce.
  • Butter vs. Oil: While butter adds richness to the sauce, using a mix of olive oil and butter for searing the chicken helps prevent the butter from burning at higher heat.

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.
