INGREDIENTS

  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 2 (15 oz) cans navy beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 teaspoons chopped parsley (for garnish)

DIRECTIONS

  • Step No.1: Cook the bacon
In a large pot, cook chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove and set aside. Leave 1 tablespoon of bacon fat in the pot.

  • Step No.2: Sauté vegetables
Add onion, carrots, and celery to the pot. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.

  • Step No.3: Add broth and seasonings
Pour in chicken broth, add beans, bay leaf, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  • Step No.4: Simmer the soup
Cover and simmer for 20–25 minutes until vegetables are tender and flavours meld.

  • Step No.5: Blend part of the soup
For a creamier texture, blend 1–2 cups of soup and return it to the pot, or use an immersion blender.

  • Step No.6: Stir in bacon and garnish
Stir the cooked bacon back into the soup. Remove bay leaf, taste, and adjust seasoning. Garnish with fresh parsley.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

  • Cook bacon thoroughly: Crispy bacon renders more flavour and texture, enhancing the soup’s smoky depth.

  • Use good broth: Homemade or quality store-bought broth adds rich, authentic taste and boosts soup flavour.

  • Partially blend soup: Blending half creates creamy texture while keeping bean pieces intact for interest.

  • Season gradually: Taste as you go to avoid over-salting and balance the smoky, salty notes.

  • Add fresh herbs: Parsley or thyme freshens the soup and adds complexity without overpowering.

  • Use dried beans for best flavour: Soaked dried beans offer better texture and depth compared to canned.

  • Serve with crusty bread: Complements the hearty soup and makes for a satisfying meal.

VARIATIONS

  • Add vegetables: Carrots, celery, or potatoes enhance nutrition and add sweetness and texture.

  • Use different beans: Substitute with navy, cannellini, or pinto beans for varied flavour profiles.

  • Spicy kick: Add a pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika for warmth and extra depth.

  • Make it vegetarian diet: Omit bacon and add smoked paprika or liquid smoke for a smoky flavour.

  • Creamy version: Stir in a splash of cream or coconut milk before serving for richness.

  • Use turkey bacon: Lower-fat alternative that still adds smoky taste without extra grease.

  • Add greens: Stir in chopped kale or spinach at the end for extra vitamins and colour.

About Sana Umer

I'm Sana Umer — the home cook behind every recipe on For Foodie Friends. I'm a Pakistani-American mom of two based in the US, and I've been cooking seriously for about a decade now, mostly because feeding a family every day is the fastest way to learn how to actually cook.

I'm completely self-taught. I learned by watching my mother in Pakistan, by burning a lot of food in my early years, and by paying attention to which recipes worked and which ones needed fixing. I don't specialize in just one cuisine — I cook the Pakistani dishes I grew up with, the American desserts my kids request, weeknight dinners, holiday roasts, and everything in between.

Every recipe is personally tested in my own kitchen, every word is written by me, and every photo is taken of food I actually made.

Hi, I'm Sana Umer — the home cook, recipe tester, and writer behind For Foodie Friends.

I'm a Pakistani-American mom based in the US. I learned to cook in two kitchens — my mother's in Pakistan, where I grew up watching whole spices bloom in oil, and my own kitchen now, where I cook for my husband and kids.

Every recipe on this site has been tested in my own kitchen, often more times than I'd like to admit, before it ever made it here. I cook a little bit of everything: the Pakistani comfort food I grew up with, the American desserts my kids beg for, weeknight dinners that need to come together fast, and the holiday spreads that take all day.

If a recipe is on this site, it earned its place. No ghostwriters, no AI shortcuts, no copy-paste from somewhere else — just real recipes from a real kitchen, written to actually work the first time you make them.

Welcome to my corner of the internet.

— Sana
