Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup black cocoa powder or Dutch-processed cocoa
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or hot coffee for depth

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.

Make the Batter:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Stir in hot water or coffee last; the batter will be thin.

Bake the Cake:

  • Divide batter evenly between the pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Prepare Frosting:

  • Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt. Beat until light and fluffy.

Assemble the Cake:

  • Frost between layers and over the top and sides of the cake. Chill before slicing for clean layers.
