Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, cornstarch, and salt.
Add Milk: Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
Cook Pudding: Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil, about 8–10 minutes.
Add Butter & Vanilla: Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract until smooth.
