Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 1 packet brown gravy mix
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional, for thicker gravy

Instructions

Make the Meatballs:

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Shape into meatballs, about 1 ½ inches in diameter.

Brown the Meatballs (Optional):

  • For extra flavor, brown the meatballs in a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes on each side. This step is optional, but it adds a nice depth of flavor to the meatballs.

Prepare the Gravy:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the brown gravy mix, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Pour this mixture into the slow cooker.

Cook the Meatballs:

  • Place the meatballs into the slow cooker and cover with the gravy mixture. Cook on low for 4-6 hours, until the meatballs are cooked through and tender. If you'd like a thicker gravy, stir in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons of water during the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Serve:

  • Serve the Salisbury steak meatballs over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles, and spoon the savory gravy over the top.

Notes

  • Make Ahead: The meatballs can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days before cooking in the slow cooker. You can also freeze the meatballs for up to 3 months before cooking.
  • Customizing the Flavor: Add sautéed mushrooms or onions to the gravy for extra flavor. You can also sprinkle in some fresh herbs like parsley or thyme for a more aromatic taste.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or over egg noodles to complete the meal.
  • Allergy-Friendly Options: For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs. Ensure the gravy mix is gluten-free, or make your own from scratch.
  • Storage Tips: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove with a little extra broth or water if needed.
