Ingredients

  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats use certified gluten-free if needed
  • ¾ cup liquid of choice milk, almond milk, soy milk, water, etc. - adjust based on desired consistency and protein powder absorption
  • 1 scoop approx. 20-30g protein powder (whey, casein, plant-based - flavor of your choice, e.g., vanilla, chocolate, unflavored)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds for thickening, healthy fats, and fiber
  • Optional: 1-2 tablespoons sweetener maple syrup, honey, stevia, erythritol - adjust based on protein powder sweetness
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract or other flavorings almond extract, cinnamon, etc.
  • Pinch of salt enhances flavor

Instructions

  • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a jar or airtight container (like a mason jar), add the rolled oats, protein powder, chia seeds, and a pinch of salt. Whisk briefly to combine dry ingredients and prevent the protein powder from clumping.
  • Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in your liquid of choice, optional sweetener, and vanilla extract (if using).
  • Mix Thoroughly: Stir vigorously or shake the sealed jar until all ingredients are well combined and there are no dry pockets of protein powder or oats at the bottom. Ensure the protein powder is fully dissolved.
  • Chill: Cover the jar/container and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight (8+ hours). This allows the oats to soften and the chia seeds to swell, creating a thick and creamy texture.
  • Adjust & Serve: The next morning, open the container and give the oatmeal a good stir. If it's too thick for your preference, add a splash more milk until you reach the desired consistency. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.

Add Toppings (Optional): Enhance your protein overnight oatmeal with your favorite toppings before serving.

  • Fruits: Sliced banana, berries (fresh or frozen), diced apple, pear
  • Nuts & Seeds: Chopped almonds, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds
  • Butters: Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter
  • Other: Granola, shredded coconut, dark chocolate chips, a dollop of Greek yogurt, a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Notes

  • Protein Powder Choice: Whey protein tends to make the oats thicker, so you might need more liquid. Casein protein creates a very creamy, pudding-like texture. Plant-based proteins vary; experiment with your preferred brand. Flavored protein powders can eliminate the need for additional sweeteners and flavorings.
  • Consistency: The amount of liquid needed can vary slightly depending on your oats, chia seeds, and especially the protein powder brand. Start with ¾ cup and add more in the morning if needed.
  • Sweetness: Taste before adding sweetener, as many protein powders are already sweetened.
  • Storage: Protein Overnight Oatmeal can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, making it excellent for meal prepping a week's worth of breakfasts.
  • Warm Option: While designed to be eaten cold, you can gently warm the oatmeal in a microwave-safe bowl for 30-60 seconds or in a saucepan over low heat if you prefer it warm. Add a splash of liquid if it becomes too thick when heated.
