These Patty Melts with Secret Sauce are crispy, cheesy, and packed with flavour. Made with juicy beef patties, melty cheese, caramelized onions, and a zesty homemade sauce, they’re perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner.
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickles, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Stir well and refrigerate until ready to use.
Caramelize the Onions:
In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until golden and soft. Set aside.
Cook the Beef Patties:
Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin oval patties to match your bread. Season with salt and pepper. Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side, or until fully cooked. Set aside.
Assemble the Patty Melts:
Spread a little mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice. On the other side, layer cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, secret sauce, more cheese, then top with another slice of bread (mayo side out).
Grill the Patty Melts:
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches for 3–4 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.
Notes
Make Ahead Tip: Caramelize the onions and prepare the sauce ahead of time for quicker assembly.
Bread Tip: Rye bread adds a traditional touch, but sourdough works great too.
Variations: Add bacon or swap the cheese to customize the flavour.
