Ingredients

For the Secret Sauce:

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped pickles or relish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Pinch of garlic powder

For the Patty Melts:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 8 slices Swiss or American cheese
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise for bread

Instructions

Make the Secret Sauce:

  • In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickles, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Stir well and refrigerate until ready to use.

Caramelize the Onions:

  • In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until golden and soft. Set aside.

Cook the Beef Patties:

  • Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape into thin oval patties to match your bread. Season with salt and pepper. Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side, or until fully cooked. Set aside.

Assemble the Patty Melts:

  • Spread a little mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice. On the other side, layer cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, secret sauce, more cheese, then top with another slice of bread (mayo side out).

Grill the Patty Melts:

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches for 3–4 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

Notes

  • Make Ahead Tip: Caramelize the onions and prepare the sauce ahead of time for quicker assembly.
  • Bread Tip: Rye bread adds a traditional touch, but sourdough works great too.
  • Variations: Add bacon or swap the cheese to customize the flavour.
