  • 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 2 –3 tablespoons heavy cream as needed for consistency

Instructions

Preheat Oven:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

Cream Butter and Sugar:

Add Eggs and Flavorings:

  • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in orange zest and vanilla extract.

Alternate Adding Dry and Wet:

  • Add the dry ingredients alternately with milk and orange juice, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Bake:

  • Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool:

  • Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Prepare Frosting:

  • Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in vanilla, orange juice, and orange zest. Add heavy cream as needed to reach spreading consistency.

Assemble:

  • Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting over the top. Add second layer and frost the top and sides.
