Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup maraschino cherries, drained and patted dry, then roughly chopped

Instructions

  • Cream butter and sugars: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs and vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Add chocolate chips and cherries: Stir in the chocolate chips and chopped maraschino cherries.
  • Chill dough (optional): Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This will help prevent the cookies from spreading too much during baking.
  • Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Bake cookies: Drop rounded tablespoons of cookie dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each cookie. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
  • Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Maraschino Cherries: Make sure the maraschino cherries are well drained and patted dry before chopping them. This will prevent the cookies from becoming soggy.
  • Chocolate Chips: You can use milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, or dark chocolate chips.
  • Chilling: Chilling the dough is optional, but it helps to prevent the cookies from spreading too much during baking.
  • Baking Time: Baking times may vary slightly depending on your oven. Keep an eye on the cookies and remove them when the edges are golden brown.
