Italian meatball subs are hearty, cheesy, and full of flavor. Juicy homemade meatballs are simmered in marinara sauce, topped with melted mozzarella, and served on fresh rolls for a perfect family dinner or party sandwich.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb 450g ground beef
  • ½ lb 225g ground pork (optional)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 4 –6 sub rolls or hoagie buns
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Optional: fresh basil for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Make Meatballs: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Form into 1½-inch meatballs.
  • Bake Meatballs: Place meatballs on a greased baking sheet and bake 15–20 minutes until cooked through.
  • Simmer in Sauce: Transfer meatballs to a skillet with marinara sauce. Simmer for 5–10 minutes to absorb flavors.
  • Assemble Subs: Slice rolls and fill each with meatballs and sauce. Top with shredded mozzarella.
  • Melt Cheese: Broil in the oven for 2–3 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve: Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve warm.

  • Make Ahead: Meatballs can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
