Indian Frybread is a soft, puffy flatbread that’s fried until golden and delicious. This traditional Native American recipe is perfect on its own or served with sweet or savoury toppings like honey, taco fillings, or powdered sugar.
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add warm water and mix until a soft dough forms. Knead gently until smooth (about 2 minutes).
Rest the Dough:
Cover the bowl and let the dough rest for 30 minutes at room temperature.
Shape:
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten into ¼-inch thick rounds.
Fry:
Heat 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Fry one piece at a time for about 1–2 minutes per side or until puffed and golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
Notes
Topping Ideas: Serve with taco toppings (Indian Tacos), honey, cinnamon sugar, or powdered sugar.
Make Ahead: Frybread is best fresh but can be reheated in the oven at 300°F for 5–7 minutes.
Dough Tip: Don’t overwork the dough to keep it tender and fluffy.
Oil Tip: Ensure oil is hot enough to puff the bread (about 350°F).
