Equipment

  • 1 Large bowl to soak rice
  • 1 Large pan

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice washed and soaked for 30 minutes
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1.5 cups Water

Instructions

  • Wash the rice well under running water till the water runs clear.
  • Soak the rice in water for at least 30 minutes.
  • Place the rice with the water and salt in a large pot.
  • Place the pot on medium-high heat and allow to boil.
  • Let the rice boil for about 10-12 minutes.
  • Check if the rice is done by applying pressure on a grain of rice. If it breaks apart it is about 80% done.
  • Strain the rice and discard the water.
  • Place the rice back in the pan and cover with a lid.
  • Place the pan on the lowest heat setting for about 5 minutes. This is called dum.
  • After 5 minutes remove the pan from the heat, and let it sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Wash the rice well before soaking.
Soak the rice for at least half an hour before cooking.
Always remember to season the cooking water to add flavor to the rice.
Never overcook the rice as it will become soft and form lumps.
You can add other flavors to the rice, like Bay leaves, cardamom pods or cumin seeds.
Placing the rice on dum helps to remove excess moisture.
