Homemade French Onion Dip Recipe (Caramelized Onion, No Soup Mix)

Sana Umer
After years of reaching for the packet version, I finally made French onion dip from scratch with real caramelized onions, and my family will never let me go back. The deep, sweet flavor of slowly cooked onions transforms this classic dip into something truly special. Now my husband specifically requests this brown onion dip whenever we have guests over.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons butter divided
  • 1 teaspoon salt plus more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 cup sour cream full fat
  • ½ cup cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup mayonnaise or Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives finely chopped, plus more for garnish
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder optional

Instructions

  • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions begin to soften and release their moisture.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and continue cooking for 35-40 minutes, stirring every 5-10 minutes. The onions will gradually turn golden, then amber, then deep brown. Watch carefully toward the end to prevent burning. When fully caramelized, they should be deeply colored and very soft with a rich, sweet aroma. Let cool slightly.
  • In a medium bowl, combine sour cream, softened cream cheese, and mayonnaise. Mix until smooth and well blended. Stir in the garlic powder if using.
  • Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture along with the fresh chives. Mix gently until the onions are evenly distributed throughout. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  • Transfer the dip to a serving bowl. Drizzle with remaining 1 tablespoon of melted butter and garnish generously with fresh chives and a light sprinkle of black pepper.
  • Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled with crackers, crudites, bread chips, or your favorite dippers. The dip can be made up to 2 days ahead and refrigerated until ready to serve.

Notes

The key to this dip is patience - do not rush the caramelization of the onions. Low and slow heat brings out their natural sweetness. Storage: Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Variation: Add crispy bacon bits or fresh thyme to the dip for extra flavor.
