Ingredients

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Apples:

  • 3 large apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

For Frying:

  • Oil for frying

For Dusting:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Instructions

Prepare the Apples:

  • Peel and core the apples. Slice them into ¼-inch thick rings. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.

Make the Batter:

  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. In another bowl, mix milk, egg, and vanilla. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking until smooth.

Heat the Oil:

  • Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet or saucepan to 350°F (175°C).

Coat and Fry the Apple Rings:

  • Dip apple rings into the batter, letting the excess drip off. Fry in batches for 2–3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Dust with Cinnamon Sugar:

  • Mix ½ cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon. Toss the warm apple rings in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated.

Notes

Make Ahead:
Batter can be prepared and stored in the fridge for up to 2 hours. Fry apple rings just before serving for best crispness.
Customizing the Flavour:
Add a pinch of nutmeg or apple pie spice to the batter for extra warmth and spice.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve warm with caramel sauce, whipped cream, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
Allergy-Friendly Options:
Use a plant-based milk and egg replacer to make a dairy-free, egg-free version.
Storage Tips:
Best enjoyed fresh. If needed, reheat briefly in an oven at 350°F (175°C) to crisp up before serving.
