Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 orange

For the Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 –2 tablespoons orange juice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin pan with liners.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  • Make Batter: Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, then mix in vanilla, orange zest, and buttermilk. Gradually fold in dry ingredients.
  • Bake: Fill liners ¾ full and bake for 18–20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  • Prepare Frosting: Beat butter, powdered sugar, cocoa, orange juice, and vanilla until smooth. Frost cooled cupcakes.
