Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg

For Decoration (Optional):

  • Colored sprinkles or nonpareils
  • Icing optional

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Make the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, beating until combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.

Shape the Cookies:

  • Roll the dough into 1-inch balls or use cookie cutters to create festive shapes. Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. If desired, press down gently with a fork or your hands.

Decorate (Optional):

  • Decorate with sprinkles or icing before baking if desired.

Bake:

  • Bake for 10–12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Allow the cookies to cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Make Ahead: The dough can be prepared in advance and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. You can also freeze the dough for up to 1 month.
  • Customizing the Flavor: Add a pinch of almond extract for a subtle nutty flavor. You can also roll the dough in colored sugar before baking for a festive touch.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve these cookies at holiday parties, give them as gifts, or enjoy them with a hot cup of cocoa or tea.
  • Allergy-Friendly Options: For a dairy-free version, substitute the butter with a plant-based butter alternative.
  • Storage Tips: Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. If frosted, refrigerate them to preserve the decoration.
