Ingredients

  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats use certified gluten-free if needed
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder Dutch-processed for richer color/flavor, or natural
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds for thickening and added nutrients
  • 1 tablespoon sweetener maple syrup, honey, agave, or a granular sugar substitute like erythritol
  • ¾ cup milk of choice dairy, almond, oat, soy, etc.
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract optional, but enhances flavor
  • Pinch of salt enhances chocolate flavor
  • Optional additions: Mini chocolate chips a scoop of protein powder, sliced banana, berries, chopped nuts

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients: In a jar or airtight container (like a mason jar), add the rolled oats, cocoa powder, chia seeds, sweetener, milk, vanilla extract (if using), and a pinch of salt.
  • Stir Well: Stir all ingredients thoroughly until everything is well combined and there are no dry clumps of cocoa powder or chia seeds at the bottom.
  • Chill: Cover the jar or container and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but ideally overnight (8+ hours). This allows the oats to soften and the chia seeds to swell, creating a thick, pudding-like consistency.
  • Serve: The next morning, give the oats a good stir. If the consistency is too thick for your preference, add a splash more milk until it reaches your desired texture. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  • Add Toppings (Optional): Enjoy your chocolate overnight oats as is, or personalize them with your favorite toppings. Some popular choices include fresh berries (raspberries, strawberries), sliced banana, a sprinkle of mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, shredded coconut, or a dollop of yogurt.

Notes

  • Customization: Adjust the amount of cocoa powder for more or less intense chocolate flavor. You can also vary the sweetener amount to your taste.
  • Protein Boost: For a protein-packed version, stir in a scoop of your favorite chocolate or unflavored protein powder with the dry ingredients. You might need to add an extra splash of milk if it becomes too thick.
  • Consistency: The amount of liquid can vary slightly depending on the brand of oats and chia seeds. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a bit more milk in the morning.
  • Storage: Chocolate Overnight Oats can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, making them perfect for weekly meal prep.
  • Warm Option: While typically enjoyed cold, you can gently heat your overnight oats in a saucepan over low heat or in the microwave for 30-60 seconds if you prefer a warm breakfast. Add a splash of milk if it thickens too much.
