Combine Ingredients: In a jar or airtight container, combine the rolled oats, milk, blueberries (if using fresh), chia seeds, sweetener (if using), vanilla extract (if using), cinnamon (if using), and lemon zest (if using).
Mash (Optional): If you prefer a more even blueberry flavor and color throughout, gently mash some of the blueberries against the side of the jar before stirring. If using frozen blueberries, they will soften and release their color overnight.
Stir Well: Stir all ingredients thoroughly until well combined. Ensure there are no dry pockets of oats or chia seeds.
Chill: Cover the jar or container and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but ideally overnight (8+ hours). This allows the oats to soften and the chia seeds to swell, creating a thick and creamy consistency.
Serve: The next morning, give the oats a good stir. If the consistency is too thick, add a splash more milk until it reaches your desired texture.
Add Toppings (Optional): Enjoy your blueberry overnight oats as is, or enhance them with your favorite toppings.
