Ingredients

  • Old-fashioned rolled oats
  • Milk of choice
  • Fresh or frozen blueberries
  • Chia seeds
  • Sweetener optional
  • Vanilla extract optional
  • Cinnamon optional
  • Lemon zest optional

Instructions

  • Combine Ingredients: In a jar or airtight container, combine the rolled oats, milk, blueberries (if using fresh), chia seeds, sweetener (if using), vanilla extract (if using), cinnamon (if using), and lemon zest (if using).
  • Mash (Optional): If you prefer a more even blueberry flavor and color throughout, gently mash some of the blueberries against the side of the jar before stirring. If using frozen blueberries, they will soften and release their color overnight.
  • Stir Well: Stir all ingredients thoroughly until well combined. Ensure there are no dry pockets of oats or chia seeds.
  • Chill: Cover the jar or container and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but ideally overnight (8+ hours). This allows the oats to soften and the chia seeds to swell, creating a thick and creamy consistency.
  • Serve: The next morning, give the oats a good stir. If the consistency is too thick, add a splash more milk until it reaches your desired texture.
  • Add Toppings (Optional): Enjoy your blueberry overnight oats as is, or enhance them with your favorite toppings.
  • Fresh blueberries
  • A sprinkle of granola for crunch
  • Chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts)
  • A drizzle of maple syrup or honey
  • A dollop of Greek yogurt or whipped cream

Notes

  • Blueberries: Both fresh and frozen blueberries work beautifully. Frozen blueberries will release more color and flavor as they thaw overnight.
  • Sweetness: Adjust the amount of sweetener based on the sweetness of your blueberries and your personal preference.
  • Lemon Zest: A small amount of lemon zest really brightens the blueberry flavor!
  • Consistency: The amount of liquid can vary slightly. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a bit more milk in the morning.
  • Storage: Blueberry Overnight Oats can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • Warm Option: While designed to be enjoyed cold, you can gently heat your overnight oats in a saucepan over low heat or in the microwave for 30-60 seconds if you prefer them warm. Add a splash of milk if they thicken too much when heated.
