Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening or butter
  • cup warm water
  • Oil for frying
  • Honey or powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

Form the Dough:

  • Cut in the shortening or butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms.

Rest the Dough:

  • Cover and let the dough rest for 20 minutes.

Roll and Cut:

  • On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Cut into 4-inch squares or triangles.

Heat the Oil:

  • Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 375°F (190°C).

Fry the Sopaipillas:

  • Fry a few pieces at a time until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1–2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.

Serve:

  • Serve warm with honey drizzled on top or dusted with powdered sugar.

Notes

Make Ahead:
The dough can be prepared and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before rolling and frying.
Customizing the Flavor:
Add a pinch of cinnamon to the dough for a sweet twist, or sprinkle cinnamon sugar after frying.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve with honey, jam, or even fill them with savoury beans or meats for a unique snack.
Allergy-Friendly Options:
Use a dairy-free shortening or butter substitute if needed.
Storage Tips:
Best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day. Reheat in the oven for crispness.
